I would be using the rifle for a little hunting and range shooting... I will be putting a JAE stock on either rifle

I'd go with AR in 308. Better accuracy than M1A and an autoloader.

if you are leaning towards the auto loader over a bolt gun then i would suggest the 308 ar as stated by rob roy

I think I'm leaning towards the Remington 700 bolt action but still not a 100% sure

whats the normal price difference between the scout m1a, remy 700 vtr, and ar in .308?

I would go with the bolt gun and get into reloading while your at it. If your planning on using magnified optics and really want an autoloader than my clear choice would be a neutered AR. The one thing an M1A has going for it is you don't have to make it compliant.

So out of the two its a bolt gun plus you'll be able to get optics from the money you save right out of the gate since a scout will set you back in the neighborhood of $1500 plus the stock. Also for if your considering changing the stock on both than have you just considered getting a SPS at around $550 it will be cheaper than the VTR so that's even more money to save just my .25 pesos.

You can always do what I did and get both the VTR and AR-10. But that's just me.

Sounds like you're more interested in the JAE stock than either rifle.

Go with the remmy or just get a 700 sps heavy barrel for 600 and by the jay allen stock. I've read else were that the Remington varmint actions/barrels are the same as the ones on the 700p

                        Stainless M1A Super Match instead.

I know, its probably longer but they sure are shooters.

Two completely different animals, with completely different jobs.

If you don't already have a good bolt rifle in .308, go with the 700.

If you have a bunch of pre-2000 original M14 mags, go with the Scout.
The way some gunshop clerks spout off, you'd think that they invented gunpowder and the repeating rifle, and sat on the Supreme Court as well.

M700 series would take the M1A. You could slice it anyway you want, the M700 will win in groups.

Do not get me wrong I am eyeing the M1A series from SA notably the SOCOM but if this were me the M700 gets the nod.
