OK I have the .308 bug - I admit it. I might be able to get a HK91 in .308 with all H&K parts except for the lower receiver which is Hesse Arms H91. Is it legal to own? Is their an available method to fix the mag? Does anyone have experience with this or similar set up? Your input appreciated (particularly if it helps me justify a rifle purchase).

Check out the JLD PTR91. Very quality rifle, the next best thing to the real deal. I believe they use all the original HK tooling to make it but someone else can clarify that for you.sigpicNRA LIFE MEMBER -
Thanks - I am most interested in how can I get one or make one California legal - are the Hess H91s on the list and or has anyone had trouble with them?I decline to answer any questions without legal advice.

It's been a while since I researched this, but I'm 99% sure that hesse is absolute junk and you shouldn't go anywhere near one.
Ditto that you should buy a JLD PTR-91 - there are many reports from people who have owned/handled/shot both genuine HKs and PTRs who state that the PTR is HIGHER quality than original HKs.
The PTR is in fact produced on genuine HK manufacturing equipment, but to much higher standards and with higher-quality components.
You don't have to worry about 922(r) US Parts compliance issues as these guns are pretty much 100% US-made.
I have handled a few first hand and the fit and finish is absolutely top notch and I don't see how an HK could be higher quality (haven't handled a real HK before, being a life long CA resident).
They are very easy to make CA-legal: get a seller who is willing to remove the fire control group, which includes the pistol grip, and send it to you separately.
Install a $0.10 (yes, ten cent) washer to block the magazine catch from moving after you install the mag and you are good to go.
More detailed instructions can be found here, and I'm pretty sure there is a forumite here who sells the mag catches pre-cut, ready to go.
www.atlanticfirearms.com sells PTRs and will gladly ship them to CA FFLs in a compliant fashion. They are wonderful to do business with from all I've heard.
Good luck!!!Comment

i used to have a hesse h91, i dont think i could get through 1 mag without a problem. took me forever to sell, i couldent give that thing away
PTR91 is the way to go very quality rifle as fas as a mag lock go's if you punch the roll pin out of the release button and put a couple of small washers under it reinstall the button it wont release the mag, just make sure the wasers are bigger then the holeComment
