Ruger Mini 30 a Good Rifle?

I'm looking into getting a Ruger Mini-30, just curious to what everyone with experience with them has to say. Are they reliable? What's a good price range for them, used or new, and how accurate are they? and do they come in a wood stock?

    Thanks

Ruger Mini 30 a Good Rifle?

    Compared to what?

If you could pick one up for what it's actually worth, and sell it for what they (Ruger) think they're worth, they'd be a "good" rifle.

If your serious about owning a 7.62 x 39 caliber rifle, there's only one answer, and everybody already knows it.

    Go with the original.
The way some gunshop clerks spout off, you'd think that they invented gunpowder and the repeating rifle, and sat on the Supreme Court as well.

Lots of posts about Mini 30 and Mini 14, check them out.

It seems like the general consensus (or is it just my opinion, I owned one for many years) is that the Mini (s) are very reliable but not terribly accurate rifles. Mine was never cleaned in over 30 years (I did clean the bore) and I shot every kind of ammo I could find (except expensive ammo) and it was quite reliable (though not totally so). As a competitive target shooter I found the accuracy to leave something to be desired, but that is a relative judgement. I could get 2-3 MOA groups, but I was used to well under MOA from my target rifles so I was disappointed. If you are coming from an AK you might even find the Mini 30 to be more accurate. If you are coming from a cheap short barreled AR with standard trigger and handguard and iron sights you might not see a noticable difference. If you are going from a nice AR with a good barrel and sights, and maybe a trigger upgrade, then you will be disappointed with the accuracy of a Mini. Going from a nice bolt action rifle to a Mini, as my New York buddies would say, fogedaboutit.

The NEW Mini's are good for what they are. Accuracy and manufacture was improved when Bill Jr took over the business after Bill Sr's. death. They didn't change the ejection problem though....those cases will crack skulls on their way out.

Hell My SKS,s (7.62x39) Has the poorest manners on the range that I know of . I apologize to the shooter next to me before I shoot them. Mini30...
I love my Mini14 ranch because it's low pro. It's not terribly accurate. But it works well enough.

They are good guns but getting a Saiga for $365 is a far better choice not only in rifle but price.

Like previous posters have said the Mini's (14 and 30) are good reliable rifles but not terribly accurate. And as the first poster said, if your going to shoot 7.62 x 39 you might as well get a Saiga rifle and save some money. At least that way you will have the future option of converting it to an AK style rifle and faster resale if you want to sell. I also hear the Mags are a bit difficult to find (?).

Thanks everyone for the their input, I appreciated it. I just got back from Gun shop hopping, searching for a good price on them; though, couldn't find a Mini-30, but did find a few Mini-14's the cheapest I have found was 669.00 before tax, DROS. These things are expensive, are they worth the price tag?

P.S, I also own a Saiga .223 and love it.

Buds has the Mini-30 for a decent price, and they give you a financing option.
My 2 cents would be don't by the Mini-30; instead spend less on a Henderson certified WASR or a Saiga. Then use the money you saved for ammo.

That there is the rub my friend. I saw a used one for 700 with a cheap scope and thought holy crap I can build a decent AR for that. If they were priced at 350-400 bucks ya they might be decent but for the same price of an AR that's a no brainer.

SOCOMS are about 1799 here in Sac at wild sports if I remember correctly. The M1A ranges from 1499 to 1799 I think here. Awsome weapons but the price makes me cry lol.
