    muzzle devices.......why?

Ok, for the common guy who doesn't engage in firefights on a weekly basis. What is the main reason for using compensators or flashhiders on our ARs? Why not just install thread protectors and call it a day? I only ask cause i'm at the point where i think i'm just going to pull off both from my ARs.
The compensators just increase the volume (it's not like the .223 kicks hard) and the flash hiders are just one more "evil feature" to remove when you feel like going featureless. And they both add weight and length (sure i know it's not much). Soo what's the common opinion on the matter? Is it really all just about looks?

    Re: muzzle devices.......why?

Mostly because you can and there is no reason not to have em really. And yes they do work not to mention the reduction in kick from brakes and flip from compensators. Oh and if you like shooting at night fs keep you from going blind lol

I don't go featureless. Most manufacturers uppers include flash hiders/muzzle device. I think it is safe to say there are a lot more OLL BB users than featureless users.

If you just casually go to the range and shoot on the bench then you would prob never have a need for either. However if you have ever taken a carbine class where they teach you rapid firing techniques and moving and shooting and all the other tacticool moves then a good muzzle break is golden. The .223 doesn't recoil much but enough to cause you to take some extra time to sight in for your next shot.

Most people that go featureless were in to these before the ban and also probably have RAWs and high cap mags to use in them, and yes with those evil flash hiders we have no business needing.

On OLL featureless a brake is certainly good to have on the threads. Why not?

My 14.7 inch barrel needs a pinned FH to meet length requirements.

When I am hammering the trigger the muzzle brake really keeps the barrel flat. Some are louder than others. My smith is not bad.

I only have FH's but got to shoot my buddy's with a FSC556 and I could swear the muzzle didn't move for followup shots.

One of my 308 ARs has a carbine gas system and target crown on the end. When I shoot surplus brass, there is a lot of muzzle rise, but with a brake there's significantly less rise. Flash hiders are nice because they get rid of that giant fireball (like on Mosin Nagants).

Main reason? Competition or carbine classes. If you're plinking from the bench, no need for a MB.

Why don't you trade your AR in for a Mini-14? Since you don't really need an Assault type rifle if your not engaging in firefights on a weekly basis.

The best muzzle device I have seen for the AR other than a suppressor is

Adding mass to the end of a barrel can change how the barrel vibrates when fired. An experienced shooter can "tune" a barrel and its harmonics to increase accuracy by changing the amount of mass or where it is attached. This is exactly why a Mosin m44 is more accurate with it's bayonet extended.

Here is a good article that explains far better than I could.

If you aren't a true operator in the non-joking sense then they aren't that important. I specifically decided not to install a brake on my Saiga rifle because I thought it would take a little bit of the fun out of shooting that thing. I am keeping the A2 hider on my AR though cause there really isn't a good reason to take it off.
