    Why Dimpled?

Saw an ad wanting to buy a dimpled Saga.

I'm curious, besides the cosmetic appearance, why would you want a dimpled receiver?

I see. Does mag wobble inhibit the function of the rifle, or...?

i don't think so theres plenty of wasr 10's that dont have the dimple. the wasr 10s rattle when you walk with them or at-least the older ones did. my saiga as dimples but it still wobbles if you make it wobble thats normal. but when you dont have dimples and its not a tight fit it will wobble and make noise.

it's only looks. you will see more variance from rifle to rifle than dimple vs no dimple.

the lower part of the rails take care of mag wobble.

a little wobble is good. you don't want a mag to fit real tight on an ak rifle.

ETA mags will also have different dimensions.

sorry it does serve a purpose it actually does serve to hold it in there better. pete from the armory channel did a video a while back explaining it.

again you will have much more varience between each rifle/mag than you will with dimple vs non dimple. i'm not going to say i'm the greatest ak history guy ever to live but i've owned a couple dozen ak rifles over the last 18 years.
from preban arsenals, polytech, feg to wasr, saigas, and home builds. IME dimples are all about looks in a semi auto rifle. maybe they matter in FA but i doubt it.
some rifles the mag would touch both dimples, some just one side and others not at all.

that guys video was great by the way. first thing he does is try to insert the magazine backwards...

I read somewhere that the russian teach their troops to feel the dimple as indicator of the mag well when reloading at dark

because he grabbed it backwards.. he didn't put it in backwards because he didn't know any better.also the russian military ak-47's have the dimples and um i dont think the russians put dimples on their ak's for appearances.and where do you think saiga's are made? at the building next to where they make the military ak's.

please explain why my dimpled saiga has more mag wobble than my non dimpled saiga.

can you prove to me that a dimpled saiga has more wobble than one that doesnt have the dimples? otherwise its all talk.

I have both types and There's really no difference. We are not talking about a fine rifle created by craftsmen here. With the loose tolerances in receivers and mags (Which is one of the reasons they are so reliable.) they are all going to wobble to some extent.

The early Saigas were not dimpled and they were not threaded at the muzzle or have the barrels cut to accept standard AK furniture. Later models had the dimples and many of those were threaded at the muzzle and some of those had the barrel cuts to accept standard AK furniture. Many people use the dimples as an indicator of the other changes. Makes for an easier upgrade to a standard AK rifle.

no because it's not dimpled or non dimpled that has more mag wobble.

it's the individual rifle and also the magazine. i can tell you the dimension of the mag well will have more to do with mag wobble than having dimples.

all of this does not really matter because some mag wobble is a good thing. the ak is built with slop as it should be.
