    Two-piece buttstock question

I am looking to cut off the buttstock of a rifle stock and modify the two parts to snap together. This way, a 40+" rifle can fit inside a 36" hard case. The rifle will be operable without the removable part of the buttstock, but the overall length will still be over 30". When I need to use it, I can reattach the cut-off portion off the buttstock. See attached photoshopped image for example.

Will I run the risk of converting a rifle into a pistol this way, or run afoul of some other law? How short does the stock need to be cut in order to become a pistol?

As long as you meet the minimum length and the rifle can still be shouldered and fired without the cut of portion you should be fine...in my opinion. IANAL.

No, it's not. It's just a generic modification that could be made to any rifle with a traditional stock.

well, the rules are different for centerfire and rimfire. just checking.

since it is not a folding or collapsible stock, i think you should be okay as long as you adhere to the 30" rule... i am also not a lawyer.

i took the easy way out on my 10/22.

If it's centerfire rifle with a barrel of 16" or longer, and overall length of 30" or over, with the stock detached... you should be good.

Just remember the overall length is fire-able configuration.
