Shooting 1,000 yards at Cuyama Sunday 12/19/10

Sunday morning we'll be shooting 2 X 1,000 yards (20 shots for score, twice) with unlimited sighters on the first round and three sighters on the second round. Sign ups are at 0730 and shooting starts about 8 AM.

New shooters and observers are welcome. If you would like to learn how the matches are run and learn to work the target butts (pits) come on out and I'll help you out. (Ear and eye protection are a must) It's nice to have a spotting scope or binos to see the target markers.

The range is located about 2 miles south on Hwy 33 off of Highway 166, East of Cuyama. Or you can drive north on Hwy 33 from Ojai. There is a white 2' square sign that says "Palma" on the dirt road on the east side of Hwy 33 and the range is about 1/2 mile back against the hills.

If you type in "Cuyama, CA" in Google Earth and travel east until HWY 33 heads south. Go south on HWY33 and you'll see the irrigated half circle pattern on the east side of the road (Not the full circles on the west) At the north end of the half circle pattern is the road going to the range.

If you're interested in coming out to shoot or watch, PM me and I'll send you my cell phone number so we can keep you from getting lost.

Here's a picture of the targets at 1,000 yards from the post I made last April. Here: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...ghlight=cuyama

For you guys who are interested in trying this, here's what 1,000 yard targets look like at the range in Cuyama (1X on my camera). Yes, those little white blurs to the left of the flags are the 6 feet wide target frames.

        Stan,

I shoot F class with a 6.5x284 and the guys at Tri-County Gun Club there in Cuyama have a great set up for shooting 1,000 yard matches. I typically shoot in the mid to high 380's (out of 400).

I haven't shot in a couple of months due to hunting season and last month's trip to Japan so we'll see how rusty I am next week.

So, did you don the rain gear, or was it cancelled?

We just set the historical record for rainfall on any Dec 18th, yesterday in Bakersfield and today is worse! I got up at 6:00 AM, took one look at the rain pouring down and went and had a couple of cups of coffee instead.

Weather permitting, we shoot the third weekend of the month. Saturday is open practice at 800, 900, and 1,000 yards. Sunday is a Club Match, with even months being unlimited sighters and two twenty shot strings of record fire at 1,000, odd months are the Palma; 15 record shots at 800, 900, and 1,000 yards, with unlimited sighters at 800, two each at 900 and 1,000 yards.

National Weather Service shows about 3" of rain has dropped on the range since the storm opened up. It was a good weekend to stay home !

HA! That's the truth. My work is sold out of any and all forms of Water pumps and hoses!

It rains a couple inches in Bakersfield and we get ten inches of flooding!

To be on topic, I plan to eventually come out and play at Cuyama...

Thanks for the great pic. It gives a very realistic look at a 1000 yards target...which I've never seen. It's my goal to be able to hit at that distance. Do you have other pics?
