How do you buy an AR-15 in California?

First of all, sorry for the question that has probably been asked a million times, but bear with me.

How do you purchase an AR-15 thats already California legal? I assume you cant buy an illegal one (automatic/30 rd mag, etc) and then make it legal with an off list receiver and bullet button right?

So, if I wanted to buy one, where do I get a California legal one where I only need to install the bullet button?

    Thanks

Start by walking into a gun store and asking to see their AR rifles they have in stock. They will already be California legal. Call your local gun shops up, it shouldn't take long these days to find one that carries them.

Get yourself really familiar with the AW flowchart first though. The link is at the top of area of every page.

Almost every dealer in California these days will likely have some sort of California legal AR-15. What area do you live in?

Oh ok, thanks guys - I live in Los Angeles

I thought you had to modify the gun yourself to make it legal. I guess this makes things extremely easy now lol

If you're in LA, head down to Rifle Gear and drool away.

Thanks for the help, I was also wondering if you can buy other rifles such as G3's, SIG556, MP5s, or whatever you like as long as they follow the 10 round, semi-auto laws?

+1 on Riflegear and OC Armory, but since you're in LA check out Addax Tactical http://www.adxtactical.com/store/pc/home.asp in San Fernando.

Of course all rifles follow the same laws. You do have to be aware of which rifles are straight up banned by name and the controlled features. I strongly recommend familiarizing yourself with California Penal Code 12276.1, specifically section A which states:

12276.1. (a) Notwithstanding Section 12276, "assault weapon" shall also mean any of the following:
                      (1) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine* and any one of the following:
                      (A) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon.
                      (B) A thumbhole stock.
                      (C) A folding or telescoping stock.
                      (D) A grenade launcher or flare launcher.
                      (E) A flash suppressor.
                      (F) A forward pistol grip.
                      (2) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has a fixed magazine** with the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds.
                      (3) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has an overall length of less than 30 inches.
                      * In this case, detachable magazine is considered a magazine that can be removed by the use of finger manipulation.

** In this case, fixed magazine describes a rifle that does not have a detachable magazine or a magazine that cannot be removed by the use of finger manipulation.

Thanks, so does the bullet button fit all rifles? Also, if the BB was installed, does it nullify everything you posted from the penal code?

There's a lot more to this than just the bullet button. If you think all your questions are answered, then you don't know what you don't know.

Familiarize yourself with the flowchart and read through at least one of the many threads on here about buying an AR-15. The section he quoted is just the tip of the iceberg.

If you don't want to do a ton of reading and thinking, go to a gun store and buy a CA legal weapon, but be aware that even seemingly minor modifications made to that weapon may result in you having inadvertently manufactured an illegal assault weapon.

                          Good luck.

Go to a local gun shop, walk up to the counter. Point out the one you want and pay for it. Then cool down for 10 days and go back and pick it up. Simple
                            Seriously...it's that easy. + 1 for Riflegear
