    Pre ban Mags

I was talking to a buddy at work. He has a banded Bushmaster. He rebuilt in on a new OLL with a bullet button. He has a bunch of old pre ban mags for that gun. I told him I believe there is some rule about using them as high caps. Could any one clue me in. I would hate to give wrong advice and get him in trouble.

Can't use large capacity mags with a mag-locked rifle. He has to go featureless. See CA PC 12276.1(a)(1) specifically A-F and 12276(a)(2). Calguns AW ID flowchart will help too.

Since he configured his current rifle with a Bullet Button, then it is considered a "fixed magazine" rifle. He should not use his pre-ban / high capacity magazines on that rifle.

He could only use a magazine with a maximum load of 10 rounds for the BB configured rifle.

If he wants to remove the 'evil features' (flash hider, pistol grip, collapsible stock), and go with a fixed stock, no-pistol grip (several options..like the Monster Man Grip, or U-15 Stock, etc), and no flash hider (thread protector nut, or muzzle break), then he could remove the BB and use his legally owned pre-ban magazines and drop and exchange magazines with the regular magazine release button.

Just be sure he reads and understands the flowchart. As stupid as it sounds, if you have none of the features, you still can NOT just put in the pre-ban 10+ round mags if the BB's still on it. Your friend MUST remove the BB and instal the regular magazine release.

            +100000

I talked to a buddy who had a long conversation with a guy with a Hammerhead grip and a FLASH HIDER. He rebuilt a Bushmaster with a Spikes OLL and didn't realize the 14.5 barrel with perm flash hider meant he was forever in the 10RD FIXED magazine build.

thumb hole stock = mag lock
            Pistol grip = mag lock
            Flash Hider = mag lock
            Flare Launcher = mag lock
            Forward Grip = mag lock

Your muzzle device matters more then people think. Its the thing that slips peoples minds. Many semi-auto magazine feed rifles came with flash hiders (Mini-14, Ruger Camp 9s and 45s, M1 carbines.......)

It is not forever a fixed mag build - he could install a slip over fake can and be ok with a featureless build.....
