I'm having this same dilemma right now. My solution is to get a 44 or 357 mag revolver and pick up a lever action 44/357mag rifle. Looking at Marlin , Henry for the rifles and S&W and Taurus for the revolver

Valley Gun In Bako will have some Ruger Pc carbines in 40 coming in early next week...

          in the sub 700.00 range...

IMHO... based upon ballistics... and having shot 3 deer with the 4 short and weak...it's ... short and weak....

          but...

with corbon or buffalo bore or double tap xtp or dpx bullets at 30 yards or so it will definitely do the job...

the first two deer where wounded does shot with black talon... what a rodeo that was... the last one a buck at about 10 feet..with a corbon 135 gr hp... wound channel was about 10 in and looked like a hi power rifle...
