looking to get my first rifle! any suggestions

I'm looking to get my first rifle and i'm looking for suggestions. I want something that I can just take to the 100 or 200 yd range and spend an hour or so having fun. I'm not a hunter, i'm just a young adult so price is any issue. I was thinking .223 will be the best caliber for me.

Any suggestions on a good starting rifle?

bolt action .223 is a great choice, affordable ammo (compared to .308, .30-06, .270, other common rifle calibers).

A savage or howa are both great choices for a first rifle like this, cost a little less than a Remington 700, and will do everything you need of it, just as well as a 700.

you can also look at older surplus style rifles, the first rifle I purchased was a Mosin nagant 91/30, super affordable ammo (buying bulk online), but it is corrosive, so if you dont want to deal with that, a .223 is a great choice.
Jobs I have had, payed for by your tax dollars:
          -Sandbag-filler who carries around a 203
          -Sandbag-filler who carries around a 249
-Sandbag-filler who carries around a radio
-That guy, who when given a single, normal M4, hides in the Bradley, and sleeps.

Surplus rifle, cheap to buy , cheap ammo. Once you get some trigger time then you can make a decision on upgrading

I know a lot about handguns because i shoot competitively but with rifles and shotguns i'm useless lol. I was thinking of going to the local big 5 and seeing what they have for a cheap 223 or go to the local gun show in 2 weeks and see if they have anything

If all you want to do is play cheaply, consider a .22lr and a few thousand rounds of ammo. That will only get you to 100 yards, but the price of the gun and (especially) ammo is so compelling you should consider it as a first gun and all-around plinker. Even when you step up to something more powerful, the .22 will remain a fun gun to shoot.

                          .223 ammo = $200/thousand (that's a great price!)

                          .22lr ammo = $50/thousand (a common price).

The downsides? Limited range/accuracy and it is definitely not manly.

P.S. The Mosin Nagant mentioned above is DEFINITELY manly!

Get something with really expensive ammo, like 338 lapua, that way you are forced to make every shot count ; )
