Recommended place to go to shoot near the Bay Area, open spaces.

    Hey Guys,

I have only shot at ranges, and decided after seeing pics of other people, that I want to go into open space areas to do some shooting. Anyone got any good recommendations that are within an hour or two of the SF Bay Area?

Also any online resources would be great. I want to be able to shoot as fast or as slow as I would like, practice shooting on the move, fast target switching ect.

    Let me know!

    Mike

Indian valley reservoir is a good spot. Most all areas are at least 2 hours away.

I haven't been down there yet, but other posts here on Calguns make it sound like the BLM land at Panoche Hills has some good shooting spots. See http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/fo/holli...he_tumeys.html or try a search for Panoche here on Calguns.

you pretty much have to leave the bay area entirely to do what you want ...

Depending upon where in the SF Bay Area you are located, Panoche could be 2 to 4 hours away.

Agreed - which is why I haven't made my way down there yet - but is there anything closer?

Try Los Padres national forest. It is probably the closest NF to the bay area. The wagon caves area is pretty cool.

Ever been to either one 21SF? Checked the site and it says huntings permitted but would that mean the same as just casual target shooting? I'm wondering if you showed up there and they would say its not hunting season.

                      Stanislaus National Forest

I think Stanislaus NF may be closer than Las Padres to Bay area. I shoot routinely while camping in Stanislaus either off 108 or off of Highway 4. Never had any issues. Look on google earth and find a forest road that wanders off somewhere all alone. Just so long as your 150 yards away from any structure you should be good to go.

Get a group, make a day out of it. Shooting at your own pace in the middle of nowhere is the best experience ever!

It's not worth the drive out of the Bay Area unless you have other business.

Man we used to just drive out east into the delta area and pull off the road and shoot on Army Corps of Engineers land. Ah, the good old days...
