I have a Ruger Mini 14 posted on an auction site and a bidder is from California, I am not. Is a standard Mini 14 legal to purchase and possess in California? I referred him to this site but out of curiosity I would like to know also.

The Mini 14 (ranch rifle) is good to go here in CA...It's a plain ole rifle (unless it's been modified). If it has any "evil features" (thumb hole stock, pistol grip, flash hider) it needs to have a mag lock before it's shipped into CA. Also keep in mind, no high capacity magazines (assembled) may be shipped into CA (unless it is for an exempt individual).Last edited by jtmkinsd; 11-18-2010, 1:13 PM.Originally posted by orangegloWelcome to failtown, population = you. -
Does anyone know who sells a bullet button or mag lock for a mini 14?It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees!- Emiliano Zapata SalazarComment

Stock Mini needs a mag lock?!
Never saw a Mini with a mag lock and I live in California.
Maybe with features, but not a stock rifle.Igitur qui desiderat pacem, praeparet bellum.Comment

Those features are when you would need a maglock.
Though you can also remove those features and ship them in the same box if if did have them lol so you could unscrew the pistol grip and lay it next to the rifle (if for some reason someone butchered a poor mini-14 with a PG).
And you have the right idea sending it to a CA FFL.
You will be fine.
Scope mounts aren't evil here, btw.Comment

IMO, adding those features to a mini in CA is going backwards. Part of the appeal of a stock mini-14 is that you can use detachable magazines. Those acting in the public interest assume obligations of accountability and transparency. Retroactively redefining goals while claiming yet refusing to disclose some "master plan" is just the opposite. So is viciously trashing anyone who questions your judgment. -navyinrwandaComment

You can legally ship the gun yourself to a California dealer. You don't have to use the services of an FFL to get it shipped here. Please read the Calguns Wiki

This is as EBR as mine is ever going to get.
Old Butler Creek stock, 2x7 Leupold VX II and a trigger job by GunDoc at Perfectunion.com.
It's an old Mini 30 with the .308 bore, so I can reload from a large selection of bullets. I prefer a 150g NBT @ 2100fps. 2" @ 100 yards all day long.Igitur qui desiderat pacem, praeparet bellum.Comment
