    Mosin-Nagants from Big 5

I'd like to add a few Mosin Nagants to my gun cabinet. Big 5 has them for $99... and everything I read about them makes them appear to be one of the best buys price wise in firearms.

My question is... has Big 5 removed the cosmoline from the guns... or do you need to do that once you've bought them and brought them home?

I apologize for asking such a stupid question, but all of the rifles I've ever seen that were stored in cosmoline don't look anything like the guns I see on the shelves at Big 5. The rifles I see at Big 5 look like they have already had the cosmoline removed... but I've read in a few places on the 'net that you do have to remove the cosmoline from the Mosin-Nagants you get from big 5.

So which is it? Has Big 5 already removed the cosmoline... or do you need to do it after you buy the rifle?

yup if you buy the one off the rack they do a half ***'d job, if you get one from the back then its gonna be all over the rifle. but get a mosin every gun owner should have at-least 1 and for 99 bucks you can't beat it.

Thanks all... a thorough cleaning they will get.

I am going to get a couple of the 30s and the 44s. They are beautiful guns... and for the price the can't be beat.

With an O3 and COE you still need to get the 25 dollar background check, only for the 1st gun in a transaction. Buy 5, pay only for 1 background check. If you buy 5, even after tax your looking at about 115 bucks each. Plus, you walk away with all 5.

i thought the point of an 03 and COE was so you didn't have to pay for the DROS.....

My 91/30 wasn't as packed full of cosmoline as some other people's, but it still needed to be cleaned

Most civilization is based on cowardice. It's so easy to civilize by teaching cowardice. You water down the standards which would lead to bravery. You restrain the will. You regulate the appetites. You fence in the horizons. You make a law for every movement. You deny the existence of chaos. You teach even the children to breathe slowly. You tame.

If you want a HEX reciever, buy it online. JG or AIM surplus.
If you buy a mosin, be prepared to clean clean clean. That cosmo is EVERYWHERE!! Big 5 wipes them down, but the cosmoline is penetrated deep into the wood which is the hardest to clean. Good luck

No... it's so you can cash and carry long guns and buy more than one handgun every 30 days.

I've bought two from Big 5. The first was an M38 and had very little cosmo on it. Then I just recently bought a 91/30 and it was caked on thick. It's not hard to clean so I wouldn't let it factor in to a purchase.

I have bought an m38 and a 91/30 from Big 5 both had a fair amount of cosmoline, though not as much as some imports I have seen at gunshows!

This Nagant is identical to the one I remodeled:

Best 150 dollar upgrade to a 90 dollar gun I have done. Also bought mine at big five, got the stock, front site weaver rail replacement, scope and rings and muzzle break all online. Mine just doesnt have the sniper downward bolt like that guy has.

Nothing is more fun than bringing that thing into an indoor range (iron sites) and blowing through 40 rounds of 7.62x54. Everyone always stops, leans back, as says WTF is that thing. lol

Wouldn't this thread be better addressed on the C&R forum?
