The bolt is the same for the .308 Garand. You will need a magazine spacer for the shorter rounds though.

I've got one, its awesome. Uses an H&R barrel. The other parts are all the same. You don't need a spacer, but it is nice to have if you have another garand in- 06. Keeps you from loading a clip with the wrong ammo... I don't run a spacer, and its never skipped a beat.

No, it is just a regular garand with a different barrel. And an adjustable gas plug, if you want to shoot commercial ammo. I shoot quality surplus ammo or handloads in mine, so the pressures are down around the 7.62x51 levels.

As SevenSix says, it just requires a .308 barrel and a spacer block.

Same. Everythings the same. Just need a barrel. And the spacer is a good idea.

Its pretty nice, because when you need parts, springs, etc, you just use regular garand stuff.

All you need besides the rifle is a barrel which you can find at Brownells or Midway. A magazine block is nice but not necessary. All it does it prevent you from pushing .30-06 rounds into it. If you only have one Garand and it shoots .308 then this isn't a problem.

Another nice to have is an adjustable gas plug so you can adjust your rifle to shoot factory or reloads without damaging the expensive op rod.

It will cost you roughly $1000-$1200 to build one with smithing and material, which doe not include re-park as well as new stock set. If you are really interested, I'll sale you my West Texas Armoury professionally done 308 safe queen Garand with all the upgrades for $1200...

All parts are USGI, HRA Receiver, Barrel is new production 7.62x51

but if your plan is to build for the sake of learning, then it's a different story

You don't "need" a spacer block. That is only used to prevent loading 30-06 rounds into the magazine. I do use one on my 308 Tanker, and that is to prevent my boys from loading 30-06 into the mag. They haven't figured out the concept of "the short rounds go into the short rifle".
If you can find a rack grade or field grade Garand with a worn barrel, all you would need to do it replace the barrel and you are good to go. Refinishing may not be required, depending on the original finish. Most new barrels are already finished, and even if the shade is off, no biggie. You can only see that last 6 - 8" of barrel anyway.

So... you're making a top loading M1-A, basically?

Seriously, Springfield armory was selling Garands in 308 about ten years back. I had one. Shot well. If you already have 308 ammo and don't want to start investing in 30;06, it can be a good rifle...

                            nice rifle bongos

I do want to build it myself or I would be all over it

and yes I dont want to have to reinvest in 30-06

as I allready have a decent amount of 308

If you calculate magazine capacity in dollars per round, it makes a lot of sense.
                              8rd garand clip- $1
10rd m1a mag- at least $25, the springfield ones are like 40, right?

                              Great for stockpiling ready-to-go ammo.

But I love my m1a too. Need another one.
