    Remington 700 barrel question.

    I have a Remington 700 chambered in .270 win.

My question is: Can I replace the .270 barrel with a .308 barrel?

I don't know much about the 700. I got it from my Dad, and was wondering if there housing is like a Ar-15, where you can replace the barrel on the upper receiver.

    Thanks........

The barrel is threaded into to the action. If you want a new barrel, you typically buy a blank in the desired diameter and twist rate and have a gunsmith install it and ream the chamber for you with the correct headspace (with your bolt).

It can be done, but it involves a gunsmith who knows how to machine it in a lathe and chamber it. Its not drop in like an AR. But the good news is your bolt is the right size for a .308 so you can do it.

The short answer is yes, it will screw in.
The longer answer is the 270 is a long action and typically 308's are short. Bolt face diameter for both calibers is the same (.473") The threads are same. But as others have stated, it will need to be properly indexed and headspaced by a gunsmith with the correct tooling and know-how. You may also encounter feeding issues from the longer magazine. With Winchesters (until they came out with their short actions), we would install longer bolt stop parts and the corret mag box and follower, but Remingtons are different.
I can do the work for you if you get over to the coast.

Easy replace and install, especially if you have a takeoff remington barrel replacement, if using only a scope you dont have to worry about sight screw holes indexing, otherwise some minor machining/chambering on factory barrel.

I have had both new barrels (2) and remington takeoff barrel (3) replaced by Kendog4570 and can speak for his excellent workmanship and highly accurate final products.

                    @Kendog...

Guys like you are the reason Calguns has a an outstanding reputation!!

                    1. Is it possible to switch from long action to short action? Im guess it's the bolt?
                    2. What might this project cost?

                    Thank you once again......

It might be easier to switch from wanting a .308 to a 30-06. That would fit the long action.
270 is a popular cartridge maybe you could sell it and buy what you want.
                      take care

The length of the action is the receiver itself which of course requires the longer bolt. A short action rifle has a shorter receiver and bolt while a long action rifle has a long action with a long bolt. The US Army M24 is a long action chambered in 7.62x51 NATO which is the same external dimensions as .308 Win so it can be done and work reliably.
