    AK recoil buffer

Is it worth putting a recoil buffer on an AK? I've heard both extremes: either it reduces the impact of the bolt against the back of the receiver and reduces noise OR all it does is screw with the return spring and transfer the impact energy straight into the receiver.

So is it worth it? Will it do more good than harm, more harm than good, or have zero net effect?

Don't fix it if it isn't broken. Have you ever seen an AK with a unusable receiver because of the bolt impact?

That's what I thought, but I figured it couldn't hurt to get some other opinions.

I've seen a couple of CUSTOM pistol builds which have needed buffer because the pistons were too short. As far as a standard AK (or any other gun) goes, if the designers and manufactures wanted you to use a buffer, they would have put one on the gun right from the factory. Just ask ANY manufacture about this. For the most part, buffers are being used to solve problems that don't exist.

BTW, what do you know? You haven't even finished your first build yet!

I have buffers in both my AKs and they are excellent. The reason I placed them in is not so much of the bolt carrier banging at the rear trunnion but, the fact that the buffer eliminates the bolt carrier from "jumping the rails."

I've used them before, for the exact reason.

If your BC is jumping the rails, your rails are cut too much and/or your return spring is too weak. Replacing the spring is a better solution than adding a buffer.

yep if you dont "need" it; it is not needed

i saw a guy struggling with his century arms wasr it ddi that same thing at the rear it would randomly lockup

                    the buffertech solved his problem

heck with my slr 95 half the time it doesn't feel like the bolt actually slams into the rear

sometimes i feel the clack sometimes its just a wooga wooga like that shake weight thing

Notice how it keeps firing without the shooter letting up on the trigger? It must be "broken". OK, notice how the BC does not hit the rear trunion? If you put a buffer in there, the rear trunion is going to absorb some of the impact that the spring is now absorbing.

The only reason to use a buffer on an AK is if the AK is not built quite right and you want to mechanically block the BC and/or the gas piston from traveling too far rearward.

I've shot an AK pistol with and without it. I don't think it made a huge difference. Both pistols were built off AMD-65s with brakes. The one without didn't have any less kick than the one with in my opinion. Personally, I think if the recoil of an AK is giving you a hard time you ought to slap a brake on it and call it a day.

However, if your rear trunnion is getting banged to hell due to a poor build, some might argue its worth getting just to keep your gun together.
