How to Load CA Legal AR-15 at SoCal Shooting Ranges

I'm thinking of buying a S&W MP15 with either a bullet button or Prince 50 to make it CA legal. My question is, at typical shooting ranges in SoCal (say Burro Canyon or Angeles), do people here topload only even if they have the bullet button or Prince 50, or do they use the bullet button or Prince 50 to detach the empty magazine (with a tool) and put in a loaded magazine? If people use the Prince 50, then how long does it take to detach and attach the magazine and is it a cumbersome thing to do?

haha, actually a good question, but it has already been covered here many times bro.

      Check this link out:

I would research the above link if I were you...

EDIT: Like others said, only using BB if you plan on removing Mag. Prince50 makes a BB AND a Mag-Lock, so the question is a little confusing. Mag-Lock = Top Load, BB = Remove Mag (with Tool). Whats nice about the Mag Lock however, is you can back the screw out when you take it out of state (assuming you left the spring in), and when you cross AZ lines, you can have a regular drop-mag AR. Sorry for confusing response

If you use the Search Function in the future, you'd be suprised how much you can learn. And if you have a "General" question like this, there is a good chance it has already been answered, multiple times.

      Good luck bro!

Removing a magazine with the BB = legal.

Removing a magazine with the Prince50 = illegal.

assuming there are evil features like a pistol grip etc....
these are just my opinions, blah blah blah....

Using the old prince 50 you would be illegal if you remove the magazine. The catch is even though it takes a tool to remove the set screw once that is out you can use your finger to work the magazine release. With the bullet button removal of the mag is legal because you CAN NOT REMOVE THE MAG WITHOUT A TOOL. The design of the bullet button makes it impossible to remove the magazine without a inserting a tool and working the mag release with it. My 2 year old could not put her finger in the hole. I'm pretty sure my 2 month old could but he is not strong enough to work the button.

Ya.......once againn if you plan on using the P50 exclusively in CALI......leave the spring out......it'll render it useless w/o the screw......use your head people.....

How long? Well, assuming you do not want to manufacture an Assault Weapon while at the range then probably about 10 mins. Here is what you do: use a wrench to remove the flash-hider - you may have to get someone to hold the rifle for you so you can get the leverage you need. Or maybe you can take a portable workbench with a vice and a barrel block. Then again, if you are doing this frequently it is probably pretty loose already and you can just screw it off by hand. Then, you need to remove the pistol grip - this is pretty easy, make sure to bring a screw driver or allen wrench to get this done. If you have a collapsible buttstock then you will have to remove that. Ok, now that all the evil features are off the rifle it is safe to loosen the setscrew in the Prince50 and swap out the mags. After the mag swap, tighten up the setscrew on the Prince50 and reattach all your evil features.

Or you can top-load with the Prince50.

Or you can do like I do at Burro and insert a bullet tip into your BulletButton, drop the mag, and slap another one in there.

All joking aside, I have seen people at the range with an allen wrench on the bench, loosening the setscrew on their Prince50, and swaping out large acapacity magazines. I would strongly advise that you do not do this.

Even if they didn't swap the mag out, if it is a "large capacity" (aka over 10) it still would be illegal to have with a P50.

+1 to either topload with a fixed mag or use a Bullet Button. Don't even think about loosening a Prince50 to drop the mag. Besides, you could probably topload and shoot two mags by the time you got the Prince50 unlocked, loaded a new mag, then relocked it.

Toploading is not that bad. To me, it's kinda like loading a revolver.
