    AR15 & Lefties

What are considerations to take for lefties when buying or building an AR15.

Is a left handed Stag model like a 2TL a good choice? Or would a brand more blessed by the AR forum communities, like BCM, DD, etc... be the way to go with just an ambi safety?

What else is there to consider?

The use would be SD and plinking up to a couple hundred yards.

Be nice if I got any terms mixed up!

no need for a left-hand eject AR. right-hand eject ARs work fine for us lefties, just make sure it has the brass deflector. Put in an ambi-safety if you want and you should be just fine.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

exactly this. I have never had an issue being left handed. just add ambi-selector and make sure it has a brass deflector. If going featureless, i'd add a ambi-mag release.

I shoot my right handed AR left handed sometimes for practice... not really a big deal.

If you really want a left handed model, Stag is a good. But I think the ammount of options and selection of uppers outwheigh having to buy something from stag if you really wanted a left handed AR.

I have a stag AR and like it. But after buying it I found so many other uppers and options I rather have.

Never had a problem shooting an AR wrong handed. I'd say you can just as well stay with a right handed gun.

Ambi safety if running a PG.

If going solar tactical grip (featureless), the safety selector makes a great thumbrest.

I also started running an ambi mag release on my featureless builds. Something to get use too, but it's nice being able to drop a mag with your trigger finger.

I am in the process of building an AR that is lefty friendly...not an left handed AR...but a lefty friendly one.

                This is what I have...

Badger Ordnance- Left Handed Charging Handle

Battle Arms- Ambi Selector switch...this a is a modular design...So I put a standard size selector on the right side and a slim stubby selector on the left...that way the switch doesn't get hung up on my strong hand.

Magpul- B.A.D. Lever...I can activate the bolt release with my trigger finger...when I reaload usually with my weak (right) hand...I can just flick the lever with my thumb as i load to release the bolt.

As far as an upper goes I'm just gonna go for a standard (right handed) one...no need to get a Stag Lefty Upper IMO...It's nice having the ejection port in my line of sight...that way I don't really have to cant the rifle to see inside...just make sure your upper has a good deflector...Hopes this helps...Power to Lefties...hahahaha...Happy Gunning .

You do not have to buy an off the shelf Stag to get a lefty rifle. You can buy an upper and BCG from stag and and have someone barrel it for you. WOA will put an ambi barrel extension on just about anything you want. I just had them do a 6.8 for me that is awesome. Just as good if not better than a lot of off the shelf rifles in left or right hand versions, IMHO.

Sure, you can shoot a right handed AR with no issues but no one will want to borrow your left handed AR.

Only distraction to a righty is the brass flying by your eyes while shooting. Outside of that the only worry is a catastrophic failure where as a right hander the BCG would be ejected away from your face and head if something bad were to occur. Not sure if anyone has seen a failure like this though. A left handed AR eliminates this issue for a left handed shooter.

I dont know why or how but that charging handle seemed to escape a couple of my rifles. Thanks for giving me something to spend some money on this morning

I too am a lefty and rock a magpul B.A.D. and BCM Gunfighter tactical latch.

Because pictures are better than my words, see the vid as it demonstrates usage with a left handed shooter. I stayed away from an ambi safety selector as some people informed me that theirs had failed in the past. FWIW, these were not people I actually know, but "internet" people Not sure if it is FUD but I decided against it anyway.

An ambi safety has a lot of advantages for both lefties and righties as everyone should practice shooting from their support side. The screw can back out but the same can be said of your grip, your sights, etc. That's why you check these things periodically, use witness marks, or blue loctite where appropriate.

(Do not loctite your ambi-safety though, as the small screw makes it problematic to break the loctite if you need to remove it.)

I have the lefty Stag and I'm getting about one jam every 50 rounds. It might just need some more breaking in. When I get some more time to go to the range I'll look into it more.

I'm left-handed and been firing standard ARs for 30 years or so. I've only shot a left-handed AR once. I've gotten so used to tuning out casings crossing my field of vision that it was odd not to see them. Other than that, there's not enough advantage to left-handed ARs to make me buy one. The only functional mod I've added to any of mine to make left-handed operation easier is an ambidextrous safety.
I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!
