PMC X-Tac. I shoot small gongs at 300m all day long with my Larue AR 15. It isn't the most accurate but good enough for me. When I'm feeling motivated, I will load my own though.

Buy pmc then reload it yrself a few times then toss it once it shows signs. That's what I do and I have proven groups of half and 3/4 moa groups at 100 with a flyer or two.Comment

Most 223/556 is similar in price.
I am just getting seriously back into shooting after many years away from it. My background is competitve target shooting so I tend to think about accuracy a lot. I looked around and did a bunch of research and it seems to me that you save relatively little money buying the cheapest ammo. Other than the steel cased stuff (which I will not use) it seems as though you can find match grade ammo for nearly the same price as the cheapest basic plinking ammo. I got HSM 68 gr match ammo for $13 a box, and some people feel it is the finest match ammo you can buy. I got Prvi Partezan 168 gr (308) match ammo for $15 and there is pleanty of other match ammo from Federal and HSM for about $20.
So what can you get bargain ammo for, maybe $10 a box. But most of it won't group well and if you are constantly changing your ammo for whatever saves you a few dollars you can never actually sight your rifle. I am a consumate bargan hunter but at some point you end up saving very little and hurting the accuracy so much that your fancy rifle become nothing but a noise maker (I am of course exaggerating). I guess I would liken it to putting 87 octane fuel in your new AMG Mercedes. Sure you will save 5% on your fillup but the ECU will retard the ignition to keep the engine from detonating and you will have less power, and you only save maybe $2 - $3 per week. If you save $10 or $20 per week on your ammo bill (assuming you shoot 5 boxes a week) but you never can really learn to aim because your rifle is grouping 5 inches from the cheap ammo, what is the point?
Perhaps for those who like to keep 10,000 rounds in the garage for when the zombies attack (and we know how slow those Zombies are so we can shoot them at very close range) then get the cheapest stuff that won't jam (I hate having my brains eaten because my rifle jammed). For me I want enough reasonable priced really accurate ammo, that I can fire from a cold barrel and hit inside 1 MOA , to last me a season of shooting.Comment

it would help to know a little about the rifle you will be shooting it with. is it a high twist rate barrel? anything faster than 1-9 you may want to think about something heavier than the 55 gr.
also, if you decide to shoot the steel core (or any magnetic projectile, for that matter) keep in mind that some ranges do not allow it. check with your range first.Originally posted by MelvinoelGreat**My friend, your Chargers sure are looking good tonight. They are only losing by 14 at the half, not to bad my friend.Comment
