How much is an AK suppose to kick?

I got my WASR 7.62x39 AK last weekend and took it to the range, the rifle function almost flawless, but I was surprised how much it kicks, I am not a small person btw (5-10' 210lb), 12GA in 870 express does nothing to me. But AK was kicking my ***, I fire off my first round with the rifle buttstock sticking close to my body, cheek and cheek bone, and boy does it hurts, the buttstock slam right into my body and my face.

I can't shoot it the way I shoot my ARs, is this normal? If so what position do you all shoot your AKs for best accuracy.

The AK shouldn't kick much at all especially if you're used to a 12ga.

Maybe you're just not used to the snappier recoil of the 7.62x39? But just to be safe you should inspect your rear trunnion for signs of damage/wear.

Recoil is subjective. I know small woman who aren't effected at all while some big dudes cry like little girls.
There are 3 kinds of people in this world.
The wise, learn from the mistakes of others.
The smart, learn from their own mistakes.
The others, well......they just never learn.

It's all point of reference.. If an AR is your only point then you are gonna be unhappy. It jumps at the muzzle more than it kicks so you just need to learn to keep er down unlike an AR which goes straight back.

As for positions for accuracy.. You know it's an AK right?

It's not a accurate semi- precision engagement rifle. It's made to fire reliably in whatever 3rd world hell hole it's user happens to be in with "acceptable" accuracy. Stop treating it like an AR and you'll enjoy it more.

        Have fun.

It sounds like the stock may be too short?

It's not the rifle, it's the dense laminted butt stock that the Romanian's have. It also has a higher comb. I can shoot a 7.62 AK all day long with a comfy butt stock. The Romy one is known for "cheek slap". Either put your face as close to the rear trunnion as possible, or switch out the stock.

My Vector didn't kick much more than a AR. I was able to shoot it all day without any issues. Maybe just get a small buttpad on it.

Thats what I think too, get a stock you find more comfortable and maybe even do away with the slant brake and get a brake that is more effective.

Right handed. The stock is long enough I think. I know AK is not an AR for accuracy bla bla etc... But my problem is that I can't align my face to see the sights anymore because I will get hit by the stock painfully. I can withstand to put the stock on my shoulder when it recoils, but that still hurts, I have some very visible red marking on my shoulder after get back from range from about 70 rounds, i never had the problem with 12GA with similar rounds. It feels like the AK recoil moves more and sharper and the movement of the buttstock cuts into my body.

Sorry I am new to the AK world, which part of the rifle is the rear trunnion and how do you inspect it for potential problems?

The buttstock is mounted to the rear trunion, here is an example of a rear trunion with a fixed buttstock mounted on it. http://www.filehive.com/files/081219/DSC04345.JPG

I think I may find out what the problem is, I notice the buttstock for AK is not straight, there is an bend in the middle, maybe I should put my cheek into that for better effect.

A good muzzle brake should help. You could also try one of those AK grenade launcher recoil pads. That should help soften the felt recoil. It also adds about 1" to the LOP; which could be a good thing.
