Hello all. This is my first post here at this site. I'm moving to the Sacramento area from South Dakota in July, and have been looking over the rather extensive gun laws that the lawmakers in California think you/we need. It's rather absurd. Anyway, my question pertains to rifles with "pistol grips." I seem to have read somewhere along the way that rifles with "pistol grips" are illegal in California, or variations thereof. I also read that thumbhole stocks fall into the variations catagory. I've been thinking about replacing my Winchester M70 bolt action with an aftermarket thumbhole stock. Does this qualify as a "pistol grip" stock and would I be in violation if I had one put on my hunting rifle? Any corrections to my understanding of the laws, or insight is greatly appiciated. Thanks for your time. I appriciate it. -mhkpilot

The law against pistol grips only applies to center-fire semi-automatic rifles and shotguns with detachable magazines. Or rifles with fixed magazines that hold more than ten rounds. There's no law against a pistol grip on a bolt gun, shot gun or rimfire semi. -
Although you asked about rifles, I think you should consider buying any pistols you might want in the future before moving to CA. Once you move to CA, any new pistol you buy has to be on the "approved" list, but if you own a pistol not on the list prior to moving here, you're OK. For instance, the Taurus 1911 or the Dan Wesson Razorback are Ok to bring into CA with you, but you can't buy them once you've moved here because they're not on the list.Comment

Also another thing to consider is that you have 60 days to register all the handguns that you bring into the state. Do a search here and I'm sure someone has posted the link to the form required.Frank

Just my opinion, but don't come. Its not worth it. I was born here, the only thing keeping me around is the hot chicks. Even they get old after a while. Actually, if you're going to Sacremento, you won't see too many hot chicks actually. It costs too much to live out here, and its too crowded. I'm in LA by the way." Formerly we suffered from crime. Today we suffer from laws" - Tacitus (55-120 CE)Comment

BAD ADVICE. DO NOT DO THIS. THIS MAY BE A CRIME. DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS "ADVICE".
These pistols may be regarded as assault weapons due to their front area in front of the triggerguard possibly being regarded as a second handgrip and/or a shroud, being described by PC 12276.1(a)(4) items (B) and/or (C).
Also, mags must be modified to 10rds in very specific ways (i.e, permanent restriction to 10 rds).
