    Mosin Nagant

    Hey guys!

I saw that they have Mosin Nagant rifles at Big 5 for like $100 bucks and I was wondering about what you guys think about them? Anybody own one? Any problems? How much does the ammo cost?

    Thanks guys,

This is a way fun gun to shoot and one of the best deals you can find. It's the first gun in my collection and I will never get tired of it. It packs a big punch and you can get the ammo for less than $0.25 a round.

I bought my 91/30 for $99 and love it! The rifling looks brand new and the stock is in great shape. Cleaning the cosmoline off wasn't fun but gave me a chance to look over the weapon and get to know it better. I found a place that sells ammo for $20/100rds and do my own reloading which probably saves me .04/rd. with lighter loads which are still accurate to 400 yards.

M44 carbine was my first gun. Super super fun. The fireballs are outstanding!
Just give it a look over and check the bbl, crown and what not. Also check for matching numbers.

I have 4 of them but paid less since I have a C&R FFL. Ammo is pretty cheap if you shoot the corrosive stuff which is no big deal in a bolt action. Just take a bottle of Windex with you to the range and when you are done squirt some down the barrel(chamber end) and run a couple of wet patches thru it then some dry ones. You can always do more cleaning when you get home. Doing this at the range while the gun is warm(hot) will really get out the stuff and made cleaning at home easy.

Sights are not real great but fun guns to shoot.

everyone should own at least one 91/30. I bought mine from Big 5 and love it. It's a 1939 Tula...kinda rare. It's in great shape too once you clean all the cosmoline off!! Buy as many as you can afford and go have fun!!!

I have the 91/30 which is the longer version. For $100, it's a steal! The ammo can be bought for about $.25 but it's corrosive. Cleaning corrosive ammo is super easy though. Just wipe the barrel and bolt down with Windex, then go about cleaning it the way you would any other gun (I use hoppees solvent and oil).

The round itself is very powerful, think in the range between a .308 and 30-06. As far as accuracy goes, I'm satisfied. I'm still learning, but I can reliably hit man sized targets up to 200 yards (The furthest target at my gun range). Be prepared for a really stiff bolt and trigger though.

Cleaning the cosmoline was also easier then it sounds. I stripped it completely down, then dropped everything I could fit into a big bucket of boiling water then wiped it off after letting the parts sit in there for about 10 minutes. Super easy. The stock, barrel, and cleaning rod just require some heat to get the cosmoline off. You can either stick them in the oven on a very low temperature setting, or do what I did and jsut leave them in your car with the windows rolled up on a hot day. Periodically wipe off the cosmo from the stock because it has a bad habit of soaking in there and if you don't get it all out, it'll "sweat" out of the stock when you shoot as this gun gets very hot very fast.

Normally I don't bench shoot much, but this is one of those guns I like to take out with friends, relax, and have a good time shooting and just shoot the bull with my buddies. However, if your looking for a accurate, smooth rifle, this isn't the gun for you. The bolt is extremly stiff and moody when it wants to be (Although I've shot 500 rounds through mine so far and either I've gotten use to it, or it's gotten smoother. Probably the former though because when I shoot modern Bolt actions I'm too rough with them lol), and the trigger isn't exactly smooth either. As for accuracy, you can hit man sized targets reliably with open sights really far away, but don't expect to shoot sub MoA's.

Over all a very fun gun. The Mosin Nagant loves to be abused, but be careful 'cause it will return the favor lol. It wouldn't be the first gun I'd reach for when zombies walk the earth, but I wouldn't feel underarm with it.

My mosin's front sight is too short. That causes it to shoot too high at 100 yards. I don't like the sight's in general. I don't know if it's because I haven't shot it enough but I wouldn't even feel comfortable hunting with it.

I saw those today. Look pretty good. I wonder if it would compare against the .30-06 Savage 110 with scope they have for $399?

There is a guy on ebay that sells a little plastic tube that fits over the front sight. Costs about $3 bucks

Or you can make your own.

                            Me, I just aim lower.

mosins almost always shoot high, easy fix as stated already is some wire insulation of the right size slipped over the front sight post and trimmed till its the correct height.

they often also shoot to the left or right, that can be adjusted by drifting the front sight side to side with either the special tool that you can find on the net (one of the guys on some other forum makes it its called the LT-2) or the more inaccurate way is to use a punch and hammer and a lead block to set the bbl onto when doing it, i did this method and got lucky and it was near perfect on my first try

check the numbers on the barrel end (right above the receiver) to see if they match with most importantly the bolt, force matched is ok. if the numbers is completely miss matched avoid it the bolt came out of another rifle at some point and as a result could have bad head space due to the rimmed design getting its head space from the bolt face. if the SN's match you are more than likely safe to shoot without getting it checked but i would avoid brass ammo for the first try as its not as safe to shoot in a possible excessive headspace situation as steel cased ammo (will rupture easier)

generally speaking if the numbers match (even force match by the arsenal) its been generally accepted from what i read that it is almost guaranteed to have good head spacing because its assumed this critical measurement was checked when the rifle was re-arsenaled

as others said check the rifling and often more importantly the muzzle, to remove the bolt is very easy just open the action and pull the trigger and the bolt will slide right out the back so you can look straight down the barrel in the store, make sure to ask the sales person if you can (you will likely need him to remove the trigger lock anyways if its the display rifle)

to check the muzzle bring an unfired round with you and ask him/her if you can insert it into the muzzle upside down if it it swallows it to the shell casing its extremely worn or has been counter bored, to check if its counter bored just use a small flashlight or whatever and look down the muzzle it will be very obvious. counter bored muzzles are ok as long as the rifling is still good in the bbl generally speaking. another thing to look for if it does not swallow the bullet check to see if it rocks from one side to the other, my 91/30 does this and it indicates that the muzzle is worn un-evenly into a oval shape and will need counter boring to correct.

otherwise yep they are great rifles, tons of fun to shoot but word of warning get a butt pad or shoulder pad when you plan on going to the range, the steel plate to the shoulder will take its toll on you after 30-40 rounds esp with non-milsurp ammo (its heavier grain than the milsurp stuff)
