Moving back to Calif from Texas.

I have a DPMS Panther Arms Model A-15 in an M4 configuration. I was told yesterday that in Calif you can not have a quick release for your Magazine. Is there a way to modify mine to the Calif version non quick release.

If I register the rifle in Texas in what way would it help me or hurt me when coming into the state to live and using my rifle at shooting range.

It is my first firearm and I am 51 Years old have just started shooting and really enjoy the DPMS A-15. I have been wanting my own firearm since 1969 and finally got exactly what I wanted.

Thanks in advance for any help or info.

You will need to get a bullet button to modify the rifle into a fixed magazine configuration (can only be removed with use of a tool). Here's a link:

Also your magazines cannot be bigger than 10 rounds. They must be permanently modified to 10 rounds or less.

If your lower receiver is marked "DPMS Panther" it is specifically banned by name and may not be brought into california. There are exceptions for certain situations with Military and Law Enforcement Personell.

As Purple K said DPMS Panther are banned by name. There is nothing you as a normal citizen can do. The best thing to do is go pay 90-100$ and get a stripped lower and transfer everything over to it. That would be legal with a bullet button/mag lock and 10rd magazine.

Purple K and Veggie thany you,
The Panther would still be illegal with the Bullet Button and a 10 round magazine I am gathering from your help here.

At the top of every page, there are links for the Cal AW ID flowchart and various other identification/legal charts. If you run your stuff through those, you'll know if you're good to go. In this case, the Panther is illegal no matter how you configure it due to it being specifically named on the list.

Yea the DOJ doesn't like certain combinations of letters on aluminum.

Banned by name can't be fixed, only replaced. But after that, the bullet button's not your only choice. Featureless rifle will let you drop mags (even legally owned large capacity mags) with your finger. You said you are moving "back" to CA, so if you owned large capacity AR-15 mags in CA before Jan 1 2000 you could use those mags in your featureless rifle... No mag lock.

If you have any other large capacity mags, disassemble them before crossing the border and keep 'em disassembled in CA. Great for reassembling once you go out of state for shooting or if you need repair parts.

Whats the reason you are moving into cali if you don't mind me asking?
You are the first person I've heard about coming in, I keep hearing about people who want to get out!
