    why a 9mm AR??

So I have seen various threads on building 9 mm ars, problems, etc. But I haven't found anyone justifying the reason for it's existance short of just simply wanting a 9mm. Is there a purpose it fulfills?

In pistol form, pretty much zero recoil, and a quite effective home defense weapon without the overpenetration risks of a 5.56.

They shoot very well in the carbine form, you can draw happy faces with them at 25 feet

Is this for real? I saw a show on personal defense tv that showed the .223 to have less penetration than the 9mm.

I keep hearing conflicting stories on this myself.

            Barrel length.

Since it's a blowback design, there is no gastube and there for you can go shorter than your short 7in. 5.56. You can also maintain the ergonomics you're used to with your 5.56.

With suppressing a 5.56, you still have supersonic air/bullet flight noise. You can load yourself some subsonic ammo but it won't cycle semiautomatic. There are specialty ammo makers out there that have "special subsonics" that cycle, but half the time go supersonic or FTE. Not really what you want in an ammo.

With 9mm, 147gr. will be subsonic. If your barrel is short enough just about anything will be subsonic and it suppresses REALLY nicely.

Anyway, I like them. Anywhere from a 5-8in barrel handles really well.
See, what I don't like about 5.56 SBRs is that you get your self a nice 10.5-11.5in. reliable gun, then stick a suppressor on it and it ends up 17in. long... With a 9mm it ends up 11in. long.

I also prefer feeding the 9mm guns. So much easier to get ammo for and so much easier to reload for. When you zip 32rnds in few seconds it's all worth while.

            ^My opinion.^

5.56 guns are always my go to, but if you already have one or two, it's always nice to have something different.

A 9mm carbine is a decent short range gun, and fun. I keep an extra around in case I need to arm a buddy - hand him a 9mm carbine, 9mm pistol, mags and a couple of boxes of ammo and you got someone to watch your back.

Once again you guys are great with the responses. But now my curiosity is really going. It seems if you build it as a pistol with a 10.5 inch barrel as seen in the posted you tube video, you would essentially have a short close quarter weapon like a regular Ar 10.5 inch barrel rifle which is a no no in Ca I thought.
But without a buttstock it is technically a pistol thus eliminating the minimum 16 inch of the barrel for the rifle? Because of less recoil on 9mm losing the buttstock is not a big deal, right?

                  Or am I totally wrong?

                    • Can shoot at indoor ranges.
                    • Feeding it pistol ammo is much cheaper than rifle ammo.
                    • You can shoot in steel plate matches.
                    • Newbie shooters, women, and kids like the low recoil and lower noise levels.
                    • They are tons of fun!

it's a lot of fun to shoot at SSA Steel Madness competition matches.

I had two in 5.56 that were pretty much the same rifle and realized that I wanted something different. I love this gun and shooting it is so much fun! Plus, all my 9mm ammo can be interchanged and is cheaper. Can't beat it!

Fun plinking rifles. Less-expensive to shoot. Can shoot them at most indoor ranges.

                            Same ammo/mags as your pistol.
