    Friends first AR15 - question.

We'll be going to the shooting range tomorrow and I'm wondering if we're supposed to take time inbetween shots. Is taking time inbetween shots just for making groups? or is it good for the gun?

your going to the range to practice accuracy. take your time and go slowly, after a while youll know the gun better then shoot faster idk LOL

If you don't suck you can shoot super fast and still have great groups. Impress your friends and the range officer too.

There are several ways to break in a barrel and shooting-cleaning-shooting-cleaning is a base technique. A lot shoot slow for different reasons. One is that when the barrel heats up more and more or cools, it may change the point of impact. Trying to keep your barrel around lukewarm is where I stay but that is for my scoped rifles. AR15 carbine tho, I would brake it in slowly and proceed from there. First AR especially, get used to it and get to know it. Then the more comfortable you get, and the more broken in the rifle gets, the faster you can choose to shoot

What is super fast Geo? Spray and pray or take your time? To each their own. In my opinion, slow is smooth, smooth is fast

Depends on the range. I pretty much go for the smoke and noise. Lots of smoke and lots of noise. If I hit the target, so much the better, but it's not my primary objective. Usually my target ends up shredded. So I go to ranges where they don't object to the more rapid firing. Some places want you to wait a second or two between shots. I won't go there. I like the barrel to be so hot when I'm done that I have to wait a half hour before I can bag it.

the shooting-cleaning-shooting-cleaning break-in technique is controversial. many people swear by it and many others say it causes more damage than good. the idea of breaking in a barrel is to smooth out the machining surfaces. copper jackets will do that naturally. it really is just a matter of getting tighter groups as the barrel rifling becomes smoother and more consistent. I would suggest going slow and just visually check the barrel after a few rounds and see if any unwanted fouling is building up before you decide whether or not cleaning is needed. shooting fast during the break-in is probably no going to do any good and possibly some harm.

Ya EVERYTHING in the shooting world is controversial. Now running a boresnake every few magazines or so will do ONLY good
