Well, I finally got my BCM Mid-length upeer to the range today. It is set up with a Cavalry Arms C6 fore end, and a Eotech 512. All of that on a JD lower with a 6 position stock. Kind of a KISS set up.
The initial mag of 3 rounds for a function test functioned alright. The second and third went off as a pop-pop bump fire or something. No idea what caused it, nor was I able to replicate it. Weird, but more likely me than the gun at this point. I put another 200+ rounds through it and didn't have it happen again. That was the only hiccup I had all day. The groupings could be covered with a nickle at 25 yards.
There is a bit of an issue with the 512 and the hand guards. I like the 512s because they use AA batteries. This makes them about an inch longer than the next longest model. The problem comes from the height of the hand guards. It sticks up far enough from the barrel that it limits how far forward I can mount the EoTech. That, in turn, limits how much room I have to mount the BUIS behind it. I have an extra Magpul MBUS that I tried out on it. It fits, but it makes it a little difficult to reach the rear-mounted buttons on the 512. So I pulled them off, and will be going with a less-bulky BUIS when I get that far.
I also tested the sight to see how well it works when you can only look through part of it. I used tape to obscure 3/4 of the sight picture. Looking through the 1/4 that was left, I was able to see the hologram just fine. It no longer co-witnessed with the front sight, but I was able to shoot with it none the less. If anything, my groupings got smaller. I repeated this several times covering up different parts of the lens, but the result was the same. Next I tried shooting the riflle while holding it tilted 90 degrees to the right and left. I have the sight set for 1.5 inches above the POA at 25 yards. The POI was 1.5 inches to the right or left of the POA, depending on which way I held the rifle. Predictable, but still good to know.
The final test was with a bayonet attached. With older rifles and bayonets, you get a marked increase in the tradjectory of the bullet because of the shockwave generated but the broad, flat back of the blade so close to the muzzle. I have experimented with this before with a variety of old bolt guns, and found that the "bounce" effect can lift the POI up as much as 2 inches at 25 yards and 6-8 inches at 100 yards. I used an older M7 bayonet, which fits on the mid-length carbine in an almost identical manner as it does a full-length rifle. As near as I can tell, there was no "bounce". The POI remained the same. I tried this several times, and it didn't change. Weird. Unexpected as well. I will have to try this out at the 100 yard range later. Still, it is kind of nice to know.
On a whole, I am pretty happy with this set up. I'll probably get the Magpul Mid-length hand guards when (if) they come out, as those are normally low enough for me to mount the scope a bit farther forward. Aside from that, this is just a fun new toy to play with.

p.s. on an EBR note, 10 out of the 12 lanes today had people using AR rifles. Several had more than one. This is such a huge change from 2 years ago when you might see one or two. I would dearly love to know how many there are in the state. That would be the kind of statistic that would make the antis choke or stroke out.
