    30-06 vs 7mm rem mag

I have a question on recoil for the 30-06 vs the 7mm rem mag

i had previously shot my friends 30-06 bolt action and i got one in eye the first time and the next too shots i fired i flinched because i got scared .

i just purchased a savage in 7mm rem magnum....i know its a larger cartrige and i was just wondering what the recoil is compared to the 30-06 and what can i do to properly contol and recoil and and have proper stance while shooting.

Enjoy. Only tip I can offer is be aware of the relationship between the rear end of the scope and your face. Knowing zilch about 7mm recoil, why'd you buy the rifle??

This is the first time I have heard that th 06 has a lot of recoil. It always felt like a ***** cat to me. I have not noticed much of a difference between the 06 and 7mm Rem mag in the recoil department. But then again I'm 6'4" 230 lb. and maybe size matters

The 30-06 and 7mm mag are very close to being the same in recoil. They are also close to the same on what they do to game animals. Make sure you have a good soft recoil pad on either one of these rifles.

I have shot both and found the 7 to kick more but not by a huge margin. Getting hit in the eye sucks but, you need to set the gun up properly for you. Maybe your buddies gun didnt fit you correctly. Pulling it in tight to your shoulder helps too. The new Limbsaver pads work really well compared to the hard rubber of the past. If it is still too much you can try some reduced loads(remington?) but, it kind of defeats the purpose of buying a 7mag. Muzzle brakes work wonders but are very loud.

If you are shooting off of a bench:
Use a front rest and sandbags to get the gun high off the bench so that you are sitting with your back as straight as possible. If you hunch over the rifle it will magnify the felt recoil.
Place a scrap piece of carpet or a heavy towel on top of the bench under your elbows to pad them.
A good recoil pad helps alot.
Start shooting with lighter bullets, the heavier the projectile the more recoil generated. 140's in the 7 Mag will recoil less than 175 grain bullets.
Adjust the scope forward in rings so that it has the maximum eye relief possible.
Limit your number of shots at a sitting until you get used to it.

                Man up. j/k

Are you new to shooting? Make sure the scope is positioned properly to allow proper eye relief when your cheek is on the gun. Also look for a scope that has a longer eye relief if you feel you need it.

Some hate them and some love them but my buddy just put a compensator on a 300 ultra mag and its down to 308 kick and he can keep his scope on the target. Bad is the gun in louder for anyone standing close but it does tame the recoil for followup shots. Its shooting .75 at 100yards and he has just started fiddling with the load. I like 7mm mag shots much flatter that the 06.

There's not really any game you can take with one of the big sevens that you can't take with .30-06. That said, 7MM Rem.Mag. is a helluva round. The recoil will take you some getting used to, but if you start with lighter loads and watch your form you'll be fine.

One thing you may want to consider if you're prone to scope cutting yourself is a scout scope. For hunting (if you're not looking to hunt out past 3-400 yards, a scout scope can be just as effective, and it is more effective at shorter distances where you're shooting with both eyes open and can better react to your surroundings.

I feel the recoil of the 7mm to be sharper than the 30.06. Shooting handguns, recoil of a .357 mag feels sharper than .44 mag to me also.
This is what I would try. I would first loosen the ring screws on the scope. Pick up the rifle and with your eyes closed mount the rifle securely into your shoulder then apply your face to the cheek rest. Open your eyes.
Look through the scope and then adjust the scope as far forward as possible while still getting a full view image. Tighten the ring screws. If you are shooting from a bench, make sure you have the butt firm into your shoulder. Whenever you shoot make sure the butt is firm into your shoulder. When shoot I keep my weight slightly forward.
I have been to the range and alternately shot my 7mm mag, .338 Win mag, .308 Win and .25-06.
I am one of the smaller guys at about 5'9 175lbs. I have never had a problem with rifle recoil or recieved a dose of scope eye.(knock on wood)
I used to flinch like hell with handguns though, that is until I had 1 lesson with my big bro fjold.
