so how tough is it really to build an AK from a parts kit? about how long (estimated time) would it take am amateur builder to complete this task and what types of tools would i need? any advice is welcome!

First AK I ever built was on a milled underfolder receiver and it took me about 4 hours from start to finish, then I paid some guy at Vector Arms $50 to parkerize it.

First stamped AK I ever built took me about three days because I was an idiot. I'm guessing it would probably take a normal human being 5-10 hours depending on how mechanically inclined you are.

From a flat or 100% receiver? Fixed stock or folder, what kind of folder. OE barrel or US or even take off barrel. Matching #'s or random parts?

What's your back round? Are you mechanically inclined? What tools do you have now and how much experience do you have working with those tools?

What I recommend to anybody who wants to try and build an AK. Buy a Saiga and convert that to start.
Reasons, you have a working gun that after you convert you can say you built that. It will familiarize you with the AK platform and you can see exactly how everything works. The Saiga will give you a reference to look at if your confused when building your AK from a kit.

I never went to a build party, I never had anybody show me anything. I asked questions and researched for a long time before I built my first AK. I also converted 5 Saiga's so I had a working knowledge of AK's. I have a mechanical back round, that helped me quite a bit also. Do your research and don't rush through anything. It's better to take your time and get it right, then it is to rush through only having to do it again.

attend a build party, it cost a bit more than converting a saiga but you learn a lot and the calgunners that attend are really cool, informative, and want you to know your rifle.
