Going to hunt Black Bear in Alaska in the Fall. Have outfitter, etc., just was wondering who has hunted bear and Calguns gun/scope/caliber recommendations?

Are you hunting from a stand, or on the ground? That makes a huge difference. If it is from a stand, most deer rifles will work just fine. If it is on the ground, you may want something bigger. Your best bet would be to ask the outfitter what he recommends. I would have no qualms about using anything from .300 Savage on up from a stand.

For black bears, .300 Win Mag is popular.

This fall, I'm hunting bear with my Tikka T3 in .30-06 with a Nikon Buckmasters 4.5-14x40 scope.

Choose a good, deep penetrating bullet like the Nosler Partition or something similar. Good luck!

Did just fine with a .308 for "Spring" bear season. I've shot hogs bigger than the average Black Bear...for some reason people are scared of the word "Bear".

Black Bears supposedly top out at 300 pounds, so I guess any rifle that would put down a large Rapper would work. We are also hunting Sitka Deer on the same shoot, so I think a 300 win mag may be the ticket.

I'm jealous, I've been wanting to hunt bear up there for years. I'm thinking about a .300WM or maybe some really good .308 loads for when I go. What part of Alaska are you hunting in?

That may be closer to the average size, but from the quick search I did, the record was like 880lbs and they can reach 600lbs easily.....but dont take my word...that was just a SHORT search.

Lol. The difference is that it's a 300lb rapper that can run 35 mph and has the upper body and agility to run up a tree faster than you can run down hill.

I'm getting a bear tag to go win my deer tag this year. Hunting in Siskyou county with a 7mm rem mag.

talk to the outfitter about average shot distance. You dont want too much scope and will probably want a variable that will go as low as 3x if not lower. Id personally recommend a .300 on up with the right bullet being more important. You want something with some weight that will penetrate.
