Noob Help! (ARs, AKs, bullet buttons, etc.)

    Hi all,

New guy here with some questions. I'm interested in purchasing an AR and an AK of some sort, and am trying to get some info clarified. I've got my research via Google (and mainly, here), but a few things are still fuzzy. I'd also like to get some opinions, as well.

    1. I'm familiar with the list of features an AW can and can't have to be CA-legal, but how does a bullet button come into play here? If you get rifle with one of these, what does that allow you to have, feature-wise, on your AW? Does that remove the "can't have more than X amount of featues" rule?

    2. I'd prefer a mid-length AR. Does anyone know of any companies that have reasonably-priced mid-length ARs that are CA-legal with bullet buttons?

    3. One source I hear quite a bit is AtlanticFirearms.com. Does anybody have any experience with their CA-legal stuff? (I'm mainly thinking about this as a source for the AK. They only list two that I'd be interested in, as I'd like a traditional-looking one.)

    4. Lastly, if I were to get an AR and AK with a bullet button, what would it take to convert it back to normal? I'm planning on transferring to an out-of-state college in 1-2 years, and would like to be able to return the rifles to as close of a normal state as I can once I'm gone.

    Thanks!

    1. A bullet button allows you to have as many evil features as you like.
    2. The bullet button only affects the lower so you can choose whatever upper you like. You may want to consult with this list of popular manufacturers when making your choice http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?k...=5&output=html
    3. Atlantic Firearms is pretty well known and a decent amount of people purchase from there here. It seems one of the main benefits is if the gun malfunctions, they'll goto the manufacturer for you so you're less likely to get the runaround from certain companies.
    4. For AR's, you just remove the bullet button and replace it with the original part which should be included in your LPK.

if you have a bullet button you can have all evil features except the most diabolical, sinister feature known to man: magazines with capacity above 10!

its a simple procedure to convert a BB AR back to standard mag release, i dont know about AK's.

Its even easier on an AK, it just requires a screw driver or allen wrench and you are good to go.

check out riflegear.com - their a sponsor here and they got allot of stuff for online orders BUT the lower still needs to be DROSed and only bought by FFL in person and you still have the waiting period -> Ammo Bros. is another store that I suggest to everyone I bought a couple guns from them so far & they have some top notch customer service too (just like the rifle gear crew in costa mesa)

the cerritos Ammo Bros store is huge with lots of selection and all the other equipement that us gun guys love...reloading, safes, tons of stuff - good luck & enjoy!!
          I mainly shoot .22lr, 9mm,45 acp, 357 & 38, 12G, 7.62x39, .308, .223/556, 7.62x54r, 300 win mag, 8x57

Thanks for the info, everyone! I've still got quite a bit of time before I purchase either. I also need to decide which one to go for first.

what rifles do you already have?

the ak will generally be more economical to shoot, might make certain animated targets go splat better, and perhaps will be more reliable.

the ar will typically be more accurate and have many more options available in terms of customizing the rifle.

A ruger 10/22, and a Marlin 981TS (tube-fed bolt action). At the moment, I'm simply intending on keeping them both stock, but reliability is good... +1 for the AK, I guess.
