+1 for the Savage 10FP in 308. I consider these to be the ultimate working man's precision rifle. Durable, simple, easy to maintain and has a large aftermarket support for parts and accessories. I think this will probably blow your $500 budget once you factor in optics, rings and mounting base. If you go with a Bushnell Elite 3200 10X mil dot, ken farrell base and TPS rings you should be able to keep it under $800. Figure that's about a dollar for every yard you will be able to shoot accurately, I don't see Remington or any other manufacturer being able to match or beat that.

SWFA has them for $179.00 (scope)
I agree, the Savage is definetly the working man's rifle. I don't own any, but I have shot one. They are a great gun for the price. Honestly, I think you might have to go over your $500 dollar limit a little if you want to get a decent set up.
sigpicIf you loan someone twenty dollars and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

My setup ran $1200. A little more then you want to spend but I think saving thse few extra pennies will make for a happy shooter.

This is close to the setup that at least 2 other shooters on this board I know of use. We are all very happy with the capabilities of these rifles. The Savage 10fp makes me look like a much better shooter. I currently have the trigger set to the lightest setting and it feels feather light. It is supposed to be around 2 lds according to the manual.

are you guys finding the Savage 10FP for much less than the MSRP? I am not a handloader, are match ammo prices gonna hurt?

I paid $650 for mine but I have seen them for a lot less. Getting them with the HS Precision or the McMillian stocks will run more.

Man, it seems like we do this thread over and over again every couple weeks. We need a sticky that says something to the effect of:

Wanna get started in precision shooting? Buy a Savage10 or Rem700 PSS and go from there.
