    What scope to get?

I cant decide what scope to get for my AR. Right now its between a Leatherwood hi-lux cmr 1-4X or a Nikon m-223 2-8X. Basically this is my SHTF rifle and while it would be nice having the extra power for longer shots I'm thinking the 1-4X would probably be better for general SHTF scenarios.

    What do you think?

My AR is a 20" RRA Coyote rifle upper with an A2 buttstock.

I am also in the market for a 1-4 scope and have been doing alot of homework on the subject lately. Here is what I found so far...

    My choices were-

    Leupold Mark AR
    Millet DMS
    Nikon M223
    Sightmark 1-4 tactical
    Leatherwood CMR

The facts, features and reviews I have read so far has the Leatherwood CMR at the top of the list as far as my personal preference, needs & wants, and price point of $249 from SWFA. I think Natchez may have them even cheaper?

I like the CMR's mil-dot reticle and built in bullet drop, which is more suited for precision shooting over CQB shots. This is something I personally like because this is the whole reason for going 1-4 vs a red dot w/ a magnifier. I want a scope that can do both close range & longer shots all in one with an emphasis on the longer shots. (4 yards to 400 yards basically) The zero lock feature is nice also.

In my opinion, most self defense situations in a SHTF scenario will happen quick and inside of 100 yards so a 1-4 scope that can quickly pop from a 100 yard shot down to a 15 yard shot at the twist of a ring is what I personally want. I like the Nikon but the 2-8 is just not for me at this time.

I'd rather get the Nikon M223 1-4x20 for $279. But then that model doesnt come with the illuminated reticle that the same priced CMR has. To me the illuminated reticle is almost a must for both eyes open close range shooting.

    Thats my 2 cents anyways.

Natchez has it for 279. Midway has it for 249. Right now im leaning toward the leatherwood. For all the reasons you mention the nikon 1-4 doesnt have the bdc reticle either, which I think is kinda cool

For me a 1-4 on a 20" would be a little too small. I would run a 1-4 on a 14.5-16" but thats just me. Look in to the Trijicon Accu Points and Burris XTR series.
