narrowed it down to one hunting rifle...

used to be, every time i got the call to go hunting/shooting, i was tripping over myself, trying to figure out which one of my hundred million rifles to take with me. im sure at least a few of you have this problem. then when i'd finally pick one, and get out there, often the terrain isn't what i had expected, or i'd miss those targets of opportunity due to the wrong choice. the worst choice is thinking "oh, its not gonna be much of a hike, ill just take rifle-zilla along..." well i dont know about you all, but i weigh approximately 470 steerburgers, and that is a lot to pack up a mountain by itself!

so without further ado, i give you my sole, centerfire field rifle.
    the remington 600 mohawk.

she sports a home-floated, semi-beat wood stock, an 18.25" lightweight .308win barrel, and a leupold vx1 2-7x33 duplex reticle scope! the army surplus "m16 SILENT SLING (aww yeah!)" tops off the package. weighing in at hardly anything, it is the perfect balance of light weight, accuracy/precision, stopping power, and "don't care too much if it gets beat up" durability and value. i did need to peel the rear sight off the rifle, but it goes back on in about 15 seconds with a flat screwdriver, and weighs less than an ounce if i want to take along some "BUIS."
anyways, i just got the scope today and was pretty stoked, so i just wanted to share. thanks.
feel free to post up your "do-most-everything" rifle!

Sweet package! isnt it nice to have a lightweight rifle that you dont mind taking into the woods. it's too easy for me to want heavier and longer rifles, when sometimes all you need is good ol' reliable.

I came to the same conclusion many years ago after reading Jeff Coopers articles about the Scout Rifles he was building.
I had been carrying around big heavy magnum rifles that every gun writer told us we HAD to have to take game responsibly.
My little .308 Remington Model 7, with its Leupold 2.5 power Scout scope has never made me feel wanting anything more. This is the later rendition of the 600.
She has Talley quick release rings and back up aperture irons, just like Colonel Cooper had intended.
A machinist friend of mine and I put her together one night after reading that article many moons ago.
If I remember right its under 7 lbs loaded with the scope.

It's OK to have a 308, until the Cape Buffalo charges.

When I was younger and hunted with dads rifles, I had my option of thirty or so quality rifles with good scopes. I always picked the same Winchester model 70 in 270, with a 3x9 leupold. I shot that rifle better than any other, my dad kept trying to get me to move up to 308 for elk, but I was comfortable with the 270. I always took my time on the trigger anyways, so I never had to take a second shot. To me it's all about confidence in the rifle, and while I know there are fantastic bolt guns out there, but all things equal I'll pick a model 70.

The great Jack O'Connor thought very highly of that same rifle and caliber.
