AR-15 vs. AR-10 Best use and setup - Opinions Please

I am building am AR-10 (20" barrel Armalite upper on AERO lower)and haven't completely decided how to set it up.

I have an AR15 set up with an Aimpoint and BUIS - figuring 200 yards in I can use the AR15. I also have a scoped AR15 for longer range small game/varmits.

So my current thinking is that the AR15 is the best defense weapon for 200 yards and closer and so I should set the AR10 up with a scope (4x16x40) for longer ranges as opposed to an Aimpoint or some other close combat set up.

What do folk think? Suggested set ups? What are you running on your .308 AR and why?

20" .308 AR-10 deserves some sort of glass. If it was a 16", i'd say add an aimpoint micro like this:

(Courtesy of Rob_S @ M4carbine.net) I undestand its not a AR-10 pattern, but close enough.

I have plenty of ARs and other rifles chambered in .223 for targets within 600yds, I use my AR10 for longer range targets.
I built one of them with a Noveske 18" barrel, DD Lite Rail 14.0, and US Optics SN3 to replace my Remington 700 as a long range platform.

I think the AR10 should have at least a 4x optic like an ACOG. If I was going to use it for CQB, it'll be a .223

I use mine for targets my .223 can't hit. Farthest i've taken it out to has been 600 yards i'm still getting a feel for her, once we are better aquainted i'll see if I can hit 800+ yards. For a 20 inch set-up you might as well for a SPR or long range application and get the most out of your barrel. But if you are going for the 16 inch carbine, invest in a nice set of irons or red-dot for a bad *** door kicking in set up

Agree with everybody else. My Fifteen stays within 100 for the most part (Eotech), and for 100-400 (furthest targets at my local range), I shoot the Ten (24" LR-308).

                Hey Randall, I'm still here
The last time M45 went to you for some barrel work, I asked him to call me, I have a G36 barrel I'd like you to work on, but he forgot

Here's a pic of the AR10, before I got the rattle can fever and painted most of my ARs

How is the reliability on the AR/7.62mm system? I ask because on another forum one of the top 3 gun shooters mentioned he hasn't found an AR/7.62 system that was reliable enough for competition. Accuracy was fine just reliability. He uses the M1A.

My experience with the AR10 has been the opposite, but I'm not a fair judge of it since mine is set up as a target platform. I get a flier every three rounds, tried different match ammo, and M45 (a member here) who is a much better precision rifle shooter than I, was able to reproduce the flier.

Ergonomics wise, the AR platform is better (to me anyway), and it's easy to build, with some parts commonality with the AR15.

I don't shoot mine much. Short of swapping out the barrel, I'm at a loss as to the flier. Some had suggested it could be the bolt carrier, but I wasn't aware of an NM or a better carrier that could improve accuracy, so I think it's the barrel

My AR10 is my favorite rifle to shoot. I have mine setup for longer range work then my AR15 setup (Eotech W/4x). I would choose the AR15 for CQB or shot-n-scoot out to 200 yds. Shooting from a bi-pod I would much rather be on the AR10. Has more reach, more punch, same fast follow-up capability (muzzle break). I topped mine with a Bushnell Elite 6500. It has a 2.5-16 variable so I can still do close up work and yet be comfortable out to 600+ when its cranked up. I have not had any reliability issues and it shoots better then my AR15. I have always felt like the 5.56's felt a bit mechanical but the 7.62's are smooth. Could be the trigger but I just really like the feel of the AR10.

You can setup your AR10 anyway you want and I don't think you'll be disappointed. Being an AR platform you can always switch from long to short or ??? in about 5 minutes, grab some different ammo and your set.

                      Never return fire!
