So...please help me with this to make sure I understand it. A Californian cant buy or own a 50 bmg rifle that wasnt registered as an aw before the 50ban right? But what if one was to own a 50BMG upper and ammo just to own it, not putting it on a lower, and they shoot it out of state. Would this be legal?

Yes, the upper and ammo are both legal to own in California so long as the lower is not attached. If you are considering buying a BMG upper I would recommend the 50DTC upper. They fire the same bullet as the BMG at the same velocity it just has a slightly different case dimention which makes it legal in CA. You could take it up to the range fully legal and blast away.If you think nobody cares if you're alive, try missing a couple of payments.

I don't think constructive possession applies to .50 uppers, but I could be wrong.I believe you're right in that it only becomes illegal when you attach it to a lower. Isn't this how that M2 that keeps popping up in they Marketplace is transferable? Since its not shoulder fired."If it wears out, replace it. If it breaks, upgrade." -Cranky Air Force Vet.

The M2 isn't considered a shoulder fired rifle. If you think nobody cares if you're alive, try missing a couple of payments.

There is an ammo manufacturer on calguns that is local to socal that sells range legal solid brass ammo loaded for 2.90 a round and I think he has standard ball ammo for 2.60 a piece IRC. BMG is also .510. The barrels are .50 the bullets are .510.
I bought a BMG upper first and was sorry I did. It pretty much sits in my safe until I go to AZ, even then the DTC gets more firing because I know it is scoped in. If you want the contact info for the DTC ammo hit me a PM. Glad to see your intrest in 50's they are a lot of fun.If you think nobody cares if you're alive, try missing a couple of payments.

Sorry for the ignorant..stupid questions guys but does this mean that you could technically get a random 50bmg rifle say on gunbroker have it shipped to a Gunsmith and have him basically reregister it as a 510??? Or what would you have to do, if everything is the same? Lets just say you got a Mcmillan Tac50 will this feed 510 rounds? There is an ammo manufacturer on calguns that is local to socal that sells range legal solid brass ammo loaded for 2.90 a round and I think he has standard ball ammo for 2.60 a piece IRC. There is no rifle registration on non-AWs. You could buy a .50 BMG and have the manufacturer rechamber it for something else (.338 Lapua, .416 Barrett, .510 DTC) but it would probably cost more than just purchasing a rifle actually built in that cartridge. If the manufacturer doesn't offer it you are SOL.
As far as having a 50 BMG upper sitting in your safe, yes it is legal but you should still keep an open mind. I find it funny this board recommends against driving around with a magazine out of your bullet button'd AR or they suggest not to use a removable bayonet to achieve overall length because of a fear of an anti-gun LE or jury yet people think having a .50 BMG upper and a separate stripped lower is safe. I'd be more worried about the ladder, it would be a lot easier for them to claim it is simply a dissassembled AW or just push the two pin and connect it themselves.Comment

.50 BMG and .50 DTC are two different cartridges, but they both use the same .510 inch diameter projectile. In Califorinia, it is illegal to acquire a rifle that chambers the .50 BMG cartridge. You would need the rifle to be chambered in .50 DTC (shorter chamber than .50 BMG) before it was shipped into California.__________________
