    Never expected this

Got my "new" BCG in today and it has been used. Smells like powder, has brass impregnated into the bottom of the carrier, the extractor has brass flecks on the bolt face, The teeth on the bolt, can't remember the real name right now, has some of the finish worn. WTF. I'll hold of naming the distributer right now. They were already closed when the mail came so they have not had a chance to respond. Could be an easy fix and a simple mistake but I wanted to go shoot the gun today. Crap. Just needed to rant a bit.

Well, you do want them to test fire it, don't you?

          Maybe they test fire them?

Most bolts will come with brass on the bolt face and some minor signs of use. Many manufacturers test fire their bolts to make sure they're safe before they ship them to resellers.

Yeah I'm not complaining, my upper should be test-fired too when it arrives.

I get this complaint all the time about uppers. My reply to my customers is always very polite. However, I am really thinking "No duh! How else would we know it was safe to fire if we did not put a few rounds down the pipe?". Its just that people new to guns, especially new to building them up one part at a time, are not used to the concept of guns being test-fired. I am sure I was surprised by it the first time I saw it, but it was so long ago I cannot remember. I only get annoyed when people insist on a return or a discount because it is "used". You see all kinds of crazy things working in retail. Not complaining about my customers, as I appreciate them deeply, just pointing out that this is common complaint made by the new guys, and something you'll need to get used to.

If you get an unfired upper, you purchased it from a crappy company. Firing it is how they test it and insure that it is safe to fire and assembled correctly. It is part of the quality control process.

So it is possible that the company you purchased your bolt and carrier assembly from includes test firing as part of their own quality control process for bolt and carriers. If so great! Those are expensive man hours spent testing parts most people just throw in a box and ship off untested.

Imagine how angry you would be if it arrived, and you wend to fire you rifle at the range and you heard "click" and no bang! Now that would be something to complain about.

Like I said, common missconception. Hear it all the time (just about a different part).

When you buy a mass production gun brand new, they usually come with a small envelope containing a spent casing or two. That's them proving to you they test-fired it to make sure it was safe and properly assembled.

Buy a really high end gun with a guarenteed MOA, and they will also include the target they used to prove it was upto spec.

The bolt needs to be proof'ed AKA HP tested. To do this, it needs to be mounted in a carrier, and then fired in an upper.

So yeah, it's "used", even though it's brand new.

Some guys just don't get it. All new firearms have been fired as part of the QC testing.

If I was test firing a product I sell I would take steps to prevent thongs like markings on the deflector. Such as putting a small price
of painters tape on it. Maybe that is just me. Test firing doesn't mean there has to be brass markings on the outside.

Yeah...and they clean them afterwards so that the customer doesn't think they're getting a used gun.
