                Missing parts

Don't worry. I had a similar thing happen to me with the rear take down
pin spring. Lost somewhere. I called a local gunshop and they had a bin
of small packages containing the various springs etc. individually wrapped.
I think it cost me $1.15
Worst case scenario...cheap as dirt has a pack of springs or pins for ar-15
                assembly available.
I used the videos mentioned above. Later I also bought the Brownell's "How
to assemble an AR-15" DVD which is excellent.

                  American Gunsmithing Institute

Shop expert gunsmithing courses, training, parts, and supplies from AGI.

Bob Dunlap is awesome, explains everything as he's doing it. Taught 30 years at Lassen CC so he knows how to teach gunsmithing.

did you shake down the pistol grip that came with it? I found a couple of roll pins hiding inside the grip.

Have you installed the takedown pins yet? Sometimes if they are well lubed, a spring pin will stick in the detent slot.
