Thompson fram , pistol and rifle?

Ok its been to long and my brain doesnt work to well. I recall seeing something about legality of converting a thompson contender/encore back and forth is bought in as either just a pistol or just a rifle. As i recall they said better to just buy a frame and then barrels seperately so its not listed as a pistol or rifle. Anyone have any recomendations? Im kicking around getting one.

Buy it in pistol configuration. Only then can you legally convert it to rifle. If you do it the other way then your stuck with a rifle.

actually once a rifle always a rifle , If you read the letters on the subject that came from the BATF if you buy a pistol and convert it to a rifle it must stay a rifle or pay the tax stamp to convert it back . Their is a rare excemption for a thompson center combo that was sold years ago , I have never actually seen the real thing .
