Gov't profile means the barrel is turned down to save weight under the handguards.

The Gov't profile barrel is the direct result of the Navy testing in the late 60's. The A2 handguards were also borne from this. They tested the M16A1 bbl, the full h-bars and the "nose heavy" (Gov't).

The Navy concluded Gov't one performed the best.

The bayonetters thought the meat was in the wrong place, and the thickness was purely for show, as under the handguards was the same diameter as the M16a1.

Fast forward to the XM16A1E1 of the late 70's and the PIP Colt M16A2 of a few years later included these recommendations.

Personally, I think the Gov't profile bbl is the best combat rifle length bbl for an AR15 ~ the extra weight seems to help in terms of accuracy and follow up shots. But if you are going to use it for target shooting, the medcon might be the better option, but CBS should be the same for both barrels.
