    AR Buffer Tube Castle Nut

Does it technically matter which way the castle nut is facing for the install? I have one installed facing away from the stock, and I just noticed I Put the other facing toward the stock.

Also... i need to tighten this bad boy down. I dont have access to a proper wrench, nor a spanner wrench. Any other ghetto ideas?

Use a large screwdriver and a hammer. Also a little medium strength locktite. For this method the castle nut pretty much has to be facing the right way

The flat solid surface is the gripping surface. the "castle" parts should be facing the stock.

Medium Loc-tight, a flat screwdriver and hammer works in a pinch, warning getting it off with loc-tight on the threads requires heat.

Before I bought a stock wrench, I just used a hammer and punch to tighten. I never used any loctite but have applied some grease to prevent galling. I typically stake the castle nut to the receiver plate. Three hards blows equally spaced around the nut with a solid center punch. Some castle nuts will have notches on where to stake.

          Makes zero difference in function.

Otoh, you install the nut backwards, found your mistake, and not gonna' fix it???

Put it back on in the right direction, and stake the nut like it's supposed to be installed. Try a little research on the build-it-yourself section on arfcom.

My Colt armourers manual shows the notches facing the receiver, This never made sense to me. I always install mine with the castle facing the stock

I suppose you could stake either side. But Im guessing the non-castle side is what is MEANT to be staked.

Sorry for the thread hijack here, but does anyone have any tips for removing the castle nut? I have busted 2 wrenches trying to get that thing off... the nut is not staked, and I cant tell if there is any loctite in there.

since you havent tightened your castle nut yet, why not just put it on the right way?

as for tightening it, i have used a screwdriver and a hammer. you can use the same hammer and a nail to stake it in place after tightening it down.

The one that is on the 'wrong way' is loctited down and not giving any issues so Im not gonna mess with it (2 years old and still tight). The new one, I am installing correctly. Thats how I noticed the differences; during the new install.
