    AR upper for hunting

I have a 5.56upper for my AR now but I was thinking about getting a different upper to use for hunting. Something that would put down deer coyotes or pigs. Just trying to get a feel for what other people are using and if anyone has any suggestions.

6.8spc seems to be popular. And you can use the 6.8spc upper on a standard AR lower. I know people who take their .223 rifle hunting for deer, pigs and coyotes though, but I would recommend something larger like the 6.8spc

+1 for the 6.8 spec or 20" barrel. I would say .308 but your upper isAR15 in 556, not AR10.

223/556 is fine for cyote and CA deer (their little). For pig its all about the .50 beuwolf

Another for 6.8 spc look into ballistics of that caliber it falls in between a .223 and 7.62x39 .... best reputable companies currently making 6.8 uppers is bison armory and ar15performance.

            Coyote: .204 / .223

Deer: 6.8 SPC / .223 (not preferable, and definitely needs a 20"+ barrel)

            Pig: .458 SOCOM / .50 Beowulf / .450 Bushmaster

6.5 and 6.8 would do anything you listed. A 7.62x39 probably would too. Pigs are NOT bulletproof, nor do they often charge people. So you don't need a massive, tank-killing round for them. The last time I hunted them I used a knife and some dogs. The time before that it was .300 Savage. And the time before that it was 6.5x53R Mannlicher. Seriously, they aren't all that tough. The guys I hunted with on the last trip might use a .22LR if they couldn't get close enough to stick them with a knife. And we are talking about full-blown 2-400 pound wild boars here. I know people like to make out how dangerous they are, but that is mostly a crock. They want to run and get away. They will normally only fight if there is no way out.

Yep, as long as it's within 150-200 yards. It's like throwing a bowling ball at distances beyond that.

I shot the beowulf and its cool and turns heads at the range when everyones shooting .22lr's but like you said you got to be close to do something with it. In all honesty I think Im going to go with a 6.8 after reading everyones suggestions and articles.
