50,000 new soldiers need a cleaning kit? $32.5 million dollars? 0.005% of the yearly budget? 1.8% of one day's worth of spending? I think Otis is charging too little.

I've been wanting to get an Otis kit for awhile anyway - so this was a no-brainer for me. I know the actual value is nowhere near $695 (except for the gubment) but it still was a good deal.

We didn't carry that cleaning kit, we had the basic $80 dollar kit. But I agree with your argument on the Military's spending budget. It's pretty ridiculous the prices they pay.

Sounds like fixed price contracts. Either the government would need to abandon the project as they did with the A-12 because of huge cost overruns or they would tell the contractor to put some of the additional costs onto a line item, like a screw driver, and a toilet seat, plus add some over here to the hammers we are going to deliver as part of the package, and what about those funny little nibs on the button of the seats, add costs to those too.

That is what fixed costs contracts do, force imaginative accounting on the part of the contractor with support from the buyer (i.e. govt) so they don't lose the project all together. If the gov't wants expensive experimental stuff designed and built for them, they cant form a committee and pick a number out of thin air and expect to get it for that price.

Granted it looks bad on paper, but its worked out at a unit cost higher up, not at the piece part.

What?! $695!! That's gotta be a typo. Who would be stupid enough to pay that much for a cleaning kit? Boresnake, cleaning cloths, q-tips, and some Slip 2000 and I'm good to go. For that much money you could go buy another gun.
