Ammo for the 74U is way cheaper. You can shoot A LOT more. Especially if you go corrosive like I do. All you have to do is make sure you thoroughly clean the camber/bore/and internals really well after. .11 to .15 a round is much cheaper than commercial .45 these days

You will not be stuck paying HK prices on everything, and for roughly the same size package you'll have more lethality.
The UMP just does not impress me anymore. Expensive... Even more expensive to convert. Mags are buku $$$, and the darn gun is straight blowback.

Mke mp5 is pretty cool, especially in pistol form. I would get an aksu before a ump but a g36/sl8 would be pretty cool to.

Both have their advantages... the Hk UMP is a fun gun, I love being able to shoot it indoors and on pistol side at Angeles range. I have a eotech on mine and it is point on at 50yrds or less! On the other hand, I bought a 545x39 AR upper because the ammo is so cheap. Right now it is $350 or less for 2160 rounds (corrosive) I specifically bought that so when I go to a free state to shoot, it wouldn't hurt so much when I ammo dump Angeles never allows steel core ammo and burro allows it only in the winter/spring time. Not sure about Lytle creek. You still can't argue with the cheap prices of ammo though... it shoots pretty good too, some hard primers, but they always shoot on the second try.
