    Naming Guns...What is the reason?

A lot of people name their guns. The question is why?

Even my BIL does this. He says, "I took Samson or Greta to the range today."
I have never thought to name any of my firearms (and if I did, I wouldn't remember all of them).

So the question is, why do folks do this?

I started with my first... I think it's a noob thing.

I'm at 47, so the naming thing is long gone.

Anytime I personify an object by giving it a nickname, it either ends up broken beyond repair, or lost.

I've never named any of my firearms because of this reason. Naming a rifle is taboo...

Why not? It's fun, harmless, and something to do. I have only named two rifles out of my collection. Funny you should post this up the same time I posted up my tribute to the Green Knights and the Black Knights.

I also named my car but I call it the "Gentlemans Sport Sedan" or GSS for short.

Medal of Honor holder Rodolfo Hernandez named his BAR "Baby Girl" during Korea. I've heard many veterans do this, personifying the rifle makes them take better care of it.

I got my first rifle when I was 12. I've bought many more firearms since then yet, I've never even considered naming any of them. Could it be an airsofter or gamer thing like "shotty", "deagle", "mossy", "remy", etc.? I think people who do this are trying to impress other's with their apparent familiarity of firearms. When I hear someone referring to their guns by names or nicknames, I end up trying to ignore the rest of the garbage that is going to follow.

I have a couple of buddies who do that, i think one named his favorite shotgun "charlene." I dont think its a noob vs. old thing; just a personnel thing. Who cares anyways?

I call my Ruger Super Redhawk .44mag "Junior".

                      But only because it's funny.

Other than that, I don't name my guns. Would take too long, I would run out of names, and I'd forget them all the time.

Mine have names as well. It just make it easier when talking about them. The names I use are simpler though.

I guess it helps that most of my guns are of different brands. Of the ones of the same brand, I call them by their model names or calibers. 10fp or 308, mk2 or savage 22.

Every gun has a soul. You gotta name em to find harmonious enlightenment. Plus, your groups get tighter after you name each one.
