Generally speaking, the Type I, II, III refer to the sights and the barrel band. Type I sight is an L shaped flip sight. Types II and III are the windage and elevation adjustable sights. Type II is milled(squared edges), Type III(round edges) is stamped.
On the barrel band, the Type I is a very narrow band, with a stamped sling swivel. These were not very strong, so they were updated to the Type II which is much wider, and had a round, bent wire style sling swivel. The Type III has the bayonet lug, and was adopted late WW2. Type II and Type III are virtually identical, except for the added bayonet lug. Some people will cut off the lug off of the Type III and use the remainder as a Type II. However, a true Type II band has the ring/clamp that goes around the barrel inset from the edge of the band about 1/32". Enough to be seen. Modified Type III will have the barrel clamp/ring flush with the edge of the band.
A true Inland M1A1 will have the flip sight, and most likely the narrow Type I band. Though it could be retrofitted at any time during the war.

Please be aware that due to the folding stock, a M1A1 Paratrooper Carbine is an assault weapon in CA based on "features." That means it's a felony unless it is a registered assault weapon with DOJ paperwork.

If you have one that is not registered, remove it from its stock immediately! Don't deny/admit/discuss this further.

You then have the option of putting a standard stock on it while in CA (legal to do), leave it disassembled (also legal) or fabricate some sort of "bullet button" and fix/pin the stock in the open position.

Spot on explanation Sailorman. It should also be remembered that there are far more reproduction stocks out there than originals.
The way some gunshop clerks spout off, you'd think that they invented gunpowder and the repeating rifle, and sat on the Supreme Court as well.
