Ruger tried a .308 mini concept called the XGI, but apparently could never get it to run well enough to make it a production rifle. With that in mind, I doubt converting your mini-30 would be a viable option even if it was possible. Since you don't seem to happy with it anyway, you'd probably be better off selling it and using that money along with any money you would have spent on a conversion and getting a rifle designed to be a 7.62 x 51 from the start.

The reason the MINI-14 is called the MINI is because it's a miniaturized version of the M14, which is the .308 beast you're looking for.

It was miniaturized so it could easily shoot smaller cartridges like the .223 and 7.62x39 (which is called the mini-30, for 30 cal).

      You can't just upconvert a Mini-14 to .308. You'll have to buy a real M14/M1A.

Sorry to heard about you poor expierence with your Mini 30. You should be able to dial it in to shoot any X39 ammo. For $800 you could have got 2 better shooting SKSs (for cheap ammo shooting) or the same money would've put you in a .308 (not as cheap to shoot).

Getting an M1a would be cheaper.

I'm curious about how the primer type could effect reliability. That don't make no sense.

Diffferent primers have different hardnesses. Most military style primers are Berdan style primers. Mil-spec primers require a harder hit from the firing pin to ignite. This mainly done to prevent "slam fires" or out of battery ignition. Different primers for different firearms.

I had to add an extra power hammer spring to my Mini-30 to have it ignite mil spec (surplus) reliably. HTH c good
