.338 question

hi i have a friend that is getting a .338 but doesent know which rifle to choose.
he was thinking of getting a barrett but for that kind of money is there a better choice? he wants to do long distance shooting so what do u think? i told him about EDM because i heard really good things about them,any other manufactures that are good just post them up.

I'm resigned to a plain old Rem MLR but I also reload for the FN, it's a great rifle and has interesting accessories.

I think his pocket book is the limiting factor. After he buys the rifle, he needs the scope and mounts, than the ammo and or the components for reloading. It's not cheap, but worth it in my opinion.

As far as manufacturers, Remington and Armalite may be the least expensive unless you get a used modified Remington with a custom barrel. Then maybe a Sako TRG 42 is next in price, and then the price just keep climbing, DTS, custom GAP, EDM ...

Remington 700 .338 LM is a decent rifle to start with, If you can find one. I appreciate mine. He should also keep in mind the price of ammo. If he reloads he will cut costs significantly. $100 for 20 rounds is nothing to scoff at, unless he has alot of disposable income. I believe Im into my whole set up, Rem 700, Leupold Mk 4, dies, brass, powder bullets for around 3k. 89 grains of powder kills a lbs real quick.
But Man Is It Worth It..............

I would never recommend that a new longrange shooter starts with a 338 Lapua.

Besides the ammo cost, don't forget the recoil and the fact that the barrel is only going to last 1000 rounds or so.

Where does he intend to shoot it?
There's little usefullness inside of 1000yds.

Does he already shoot a smaller caliber at 1000yds that he is not happy with?
