Just a simple question about AK's....

Can I get links to sites that sell good AK's, or saigas conversions to AK's or something like that. And whats the average price going for a standard AK47/cali legal of course, haha. Are they cheaper than a standard AR15? Thanks guys!!

Where are you located? It might be cheaper to get it locally. Plus you get to touch and feel before you buy.

AKs, for the most part, are cheaper (in price) than ARs. Saiga rifles are about $400-500 and a built AK using a parts kit can get quite expensive..

Hell, you can build one yourself for under $400 if you shop around a bit. IMHO, ARs are nicer to shoot but AKs are more fun to build.

atlanticfirearms.com offers discounts for being a calgunner. They have saiga's retailing for $350.

atlanticfirearms and henderson defense have a pretty good slection between the two, unless your looking for a rare specific model or something, you should be able to find something you like.

That's a whole can of worms but yeah check the vendors and use the search.

Go for one with a milled receiver. It's more rugged than the stamped units and you won't have to worry about soft/bent rivets.

Seriously? I guess we should all worry about our aks build from flats huh?

STAMPED receivers are fine... don't get caught up in the milled bs.. Yeah they are nicer but it costs more and a regular ak will last a long long long time.

Yeah the whole milled vs stamped thing is way overblown. The Russians moved away from the milled receivers with the AKM in the mid 1950's to reduce weight and cost and they never seemed to have problems with the stamped receivers. Only the original AK-47's were milled, everything AKM on has been stamped. AK74's, AK100 series, AN94 are all stamped. The only "AK pattern" rifle that is milled is the SVD (and maybe the older PK machine gun, not sure on that one).

The only reason I would go milled if I wanted to build an early gen AK-47.

That said, AK are great guns. Once you get one, you'll want to get one of each series (just wish we could get the AK107/AK108 series here with the counter balance rod)

The average stamped receiver should outlast several barrels. If you plan on wearing out 3 or more barrrels, you might want to consider getting more than one rifle anyways.

get a saiga in 7.62 or 5.45- 400 out the door probably.

get conversion kit and whatever stock you want- 100-125 tops.

get a hand drill/ tap for reciever and rock out.

A dremel really helps too, but it can be done with just a drill.

So, for a bit under 600 you can get a no crap russian ak variant, and plus gain the knowledge of the internals of the rifle itself. Pretty easy.

Or, you can build your own for about $350 and know a lot more about how they are made. Either way, you just end up with an AK, nothing more, nothing less.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't mind a milled ak but you can do fine with a stamped one. Stamped ones have been proven world wide with the design. Stamped receivers made more sense from a production stand point of not wasting that much material. Milling the receiver from a block of steel isn't that effective.
