Can't Decide... Help!!

I keep going back and forth.

I only get one shot at this since i have a kid on the way and the wife has given me a one last toy purchase.

Looking for a Long range .308. I have an AR currently but would love a long range AR, but i only want it if i can be really accurate with it. So here is what i am going back and forth on.

- Do i get a bolt action Savage or Remington? Savage 10PC or 10FCP HS Precision or Remington 700p or 700 5r or SPS Tactical

- or do i say F it and build a .308 AR? DPMS SASS or Larue Stealth Sniper

What will be more fun to shoot and if it's the AR can it be accurate out to 500 meters?

I'd get a Remington 700 for <$1,000 then spend around $1500-$2000 on some nice glass for it. Use the remainder to buy some ammo and enjoy your new long range shooting sport!

In the future you can upgrade the Remy slowly with new parts, like a stock, trigger job, etc.

You could get a fine bolt gun with some great glass on it for around 3K

I really like the look and feel of the 20" barrels.... Can those be equally as accurate as the 26" models? what is the effective range?

People are always posting this vid of a guy who's on his back porch shooting an 18 inch .308 bolt out to 1000 yards. I think he hits a small 12 inch by 8 inch plate or something. He is making repeating shots, so I think the person behind the trigger is the limiting factor here.

Get a 700 5r and a nice scope. You will be more than happy.

get a good remmy 700 and sent it to tactical operations for some fine tuning and prepare to be amazed. If I remember right Mike charges somewhere in the neighborhood of 1k for the tune up then get a nice MK4 or USO and your GTG.

A 20" barrel of the same profile as a 26" barrel will actually be more accurate due to stiffness.

The 26" barrel will give you more velocity, which will give you more accuracy at longer ranges.

A 20" barrel should be good to at least 800 yards depending on the shooter.
